PUYALLUP, Wash. – A woman in a wheelchair was pulled out of her burning home Tuesday by an off-duty firefighter who happened to be driving by. In this video, the Graham firefighter and the responding fire chief explain what happened in their own words.
The following is the press release from Central Pierce Fire & Rescue.
At approximately 1500 hrs, firefighters from Central Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to a residential structure fire located in the 1700 block of 7th Ave SE. Prior to firefighters arrival, a female occupant that is confined to a wheel chair was rescued from the burning building by an off duty firefighter that happened to be driving by the residence after picking up his son from school. The off duty firefighter was able to force entry into the residence by kicking in the front door and locating the occupant that was attempting to escape the structure. Both the rescuer and the occupant were uninjured.
Upon fire department arrival, crews found heavy fire and smoke involving the entire rear half of the structure. The fire was quickly extinguished by responding crews and there were no reports of injuries.
Central Pierce Fire Investigators were called to the scene and determined the fire to have started on the rear deck/porch area, where a small refrigerator was plugged into an outside outlet. Property and contents loss is being estimated at $70,000.
Red Cross volunteers are assisting the residents with food, clothing, and shelter.
