I have seen on here where people say that the cairns made in the 90's are better. Does anyone know what year that they changed. Would 1998 be a good helmet?

I have a 1998 Cairns N5a and it is a great helmet. Around 10 ounces lighter then the new N5A's and was made pre MSA which is always good.

      Do a search.

I have an old Cairns Aluminum "Senator" which was used by Memphis back in the 1950's. They were good then.

In August of 2000, Cairns was purchased by Mine Safety Appliance Co. (MSA).

Thank you. Why are the pre MSA helmets more desirable than post?

Becuase MSA took a great product and turned it into what most MSA products are: junk.

Are you asking about Cairns helmets or MSA?

I have worn both and I have to say MSA never had a lid that was compared to any of the Cairns helmets.

I still have several old New Yorker helmets, where the inside was made, sized, to fit you head. This was the helmets made by Cairns prior to 1970 and no impact caps. Some did have ear flaps but they were for winter time use.
