  • Maine-Serial Arsonist

Man could be linked to fires dating to mid 80s, official says

ROCKLAND, Maine (AP) - Officials say a suspect arraigned today
in Rockland on six counts of arson could be responsible for as many
as 20 fires in Maine dating as far back as the mid-1980s.
Fifty-one-year-old John Moody appeared in District Court on
charges that include a Christmas Eve fire that destroyed Grapes
    restaurant.
State Fire Marshal John Dean says Moody began talking to
investigators after his arrest on Friday. He says Moody provided
details of ten to 12 fires and could be involved in as many as 20
in Augusta, Portland, Rockland and Warren.
As far as investigators know, none of the fires resulted in
    death or injury.
Dean characterized Moody as the most serious serial arsonist his
office has come across since he became state fire marshal seven
    years ago.
Dean also says Moody left Maine for a few years and may have set
fires in other states. Officials are looking specifically at a
series of mobile home fires in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Investigators from that state will be coming to Maine to look
    into the case.
