FREEHOLD, N.J. (AP) - A man has been charged with felony murder
and aggravated arson in connection with a fire that destroyed a
local Elks lodge and killed a caretaker who was trapped inside the
building.
Tomango Sims, 38, was arrested on Monday, but authorities would
not comment further on the case and a motive for the fire was not
clear.
The charges came one day after Elijiah "Slick" Jenkins, 68,
was found in an upstairs kitchen at the Walter J. Conley Elks Lodge
1379. Rescuers could not reach Jenkins because of the fire's
extensive heat and smoke, and an autopsy performed Sunday afternoon
determined that he died from smoke inhalation and other injuries.
Lodge officials said Jenkins, 68, had joined the Elks in 1972
and became the building's caretaker about four years.
