Is there a general rule as to how many discharges would be on a particular pump? I took my pump ops. class long ago and seem to remember something about an easy way to identify the gpm of a pump by counting discharges. I don't remember the "formula".

You do need at least one rated discharge for each 250 gpm. A rated discharge is at least 2-1/2". In todays' practice it's common to see more than that.

Examples: Our current first out engine (1500 gpm) has four 2-1/2", a 5" supplied by two 3-1/2" valves, and a deluge gun with 3" piping, plus 4 crosslays.

Our second out engine (1250 gpm) has six 2-1/2" discharges and 2 crosslays.

Our new engine (1500 gpm, under construction now) will have six 2-1/2" discharges, a 5" discharge (one valve), a deck gun with 4" plumbing, 2 crosslays, a bumper line and a 2" preconnect at the back.

Stay safe out there, everyone goes home!

thanks, that really helps. I unintentionally doubled my thread so I'm getting answers on both posts. I appreciate your input.
