Cryogenic Brake Treatment

I was wondering if anyone here has had this treatment done to their apparatus brakes? If so, how much longer life span have you seen since doing this?

I'm curious to see your opinion on this treatment.

We've kicked this one around for several years; for whatever reason, never made the leap. We ususally send the brake work out. Seems like everytime we need rotors, we need them now. Never felt like we wanted to put out the kind of money it would take to buy some and put them in stock. But like you, I'd like to know what other folks think of them.

We haven't used them on engines or ambulances yet , But I personally have installed a set of four cryogenically treated rotors on my 1 ton van after the warrantee ran out. From brand new this truck had front rotors replaced due to warping every 10K miles or less and the rears @ 15 K. Luckily the dealer covered the first three sets under warrantee, but once I was footing the tab I knew it was time to make a change.

I was familiar with the cryo treating process that has been used in race engines and suspension components for quite a while. I found a company in Illinois called -300 Below that does cryogenic treating of all types of metal parts including brake components. They are great people to deal with and when you call them with a question the president of the company will get right back to you with an answer, He has called me several times since I purchased from them just to make sure I am satisfied with their product. They will treat any drum or rotor for you and ship within a couple of days.

Since installing the cryo treated rotors , I have put on over 30K on the truck about half of it towing a 30 ft. RV trailer or a 9k jobsite trailer without any warping or brake fade issues. Consider me SOLD on the process 100%. As a bonus the cryo rotors were considerably less money from -300 below than buying untreated rotors from the Ford Dealer.

We had a set of drums treated and they worked real good but the cost factor of buying the drums treated and shipped was too excessive in comparison of just buying the drums locally and replacing them during brake shoe change. I do believe that the process is a great one but when the cost becomes excessive then the budget people won't go for it.

I was told by one chassis manufacturer that cryo brakes are great and will give you much longer brake life. Automobile racing teams have been using the cryo techinque for years. But, from what I hear, it is very expensive and thats why it hasnt caught on in the fire service.

We also use 300 Below. Good price, good people. They check in every now and then to see if we are still happy. They have dramatically improved brake wear.

Cost factor??

Just a thought here....What's the cost of a life lost worth because a piece of apparatus upon which the brakes faded or failed did not stop in time? Of course, initial cost is always what the brass of the department figures most any purchase or repair on.

I would suggest you check out the website of -300 below. I found that the set of rotors I purchased from them were actually cheaper than the rotors from ford. By a considerable amount even after the shipping cost.
I received a follow up call from Dick Mayberry just the other day to make sure I was still satisfied with their product, a year after putting them on my truck. outstanding company and great to do business with.
I do not sell for them and am only a satisfied customer who is glad to recommend them.

we had brake issues with our 2000 ford ambulance 3 sets before 30,000 miles put a set on at aorund 30,000 and there great holding up well they were checked at 39,000 and still had 90%pad left im sold gonna put them on my personal truck when the time comes 300 below was great to work with

I have 2, 2006 F - 350, and I tow a 48 ft trailer behind one of them, the trailer itself weighs 15,000 lbs empty. As you can guess I went through rotors much quicker then I thought I should. I found about 3 or 4 companies that did cryogenic brake rotors, I chose Thermal Balance Brakes. After researching all the companies I thought they had the newest technology, and they gave me all technical date for my brake rotors, they did some type of vibration testing on them to show me how much the rotor changes from there process. I also called some of their clients, and they were all very happy. So far I have driven further then I did with the standard OEM rotors, but not far enough to see if they will last the 3 times longer as they say. I can say there is no wear at all yet. So I'm very pleased.

Cryogenic Brake treating

I appreciate reading all the positive remarks with regard to cryogenic treated brake rotors. Yes, they are more expensive, but probably not near as much as what you would think. The benefit of course is a brake rotor that is going to last significantly longer without warpage and cracking. For what you and your equipment is expected to do day in and day out, if we can help, that's cool.
