  • Relay pumping LDH

How many of you relay pump 4 and 5 inch through a 2 1/2 inch discharge? What flows can you get? How many of you have discharges piped with 3 inch or 4 or 5 inch piped with at least 4 inch piping? What flows can you get?

My last volly FD had an HME Ahrens Fox engine with a Hale Qmax 2000gpm single stage pump and a 4 inch LDH discharge with a 5 inch Storz adapter. I relayed 900 feet of 5 inch to a ladder truck flowing around 1500 gpm for 6 hours.

One of my former volly FDs regularly relayed 4 inch LDH from a 2 1/2 inch discharge on our supply engine and we could get 1000 gpm.

Both of our apparatus have "LDH Discharges" that amount to 3" valve with 4" pipe and a 5" Storz fitting. We have done training where we have done a little over 2000' between 1000 and 1500gpm. I would need to actually test it to see how much less the flow would be through a regular 2.5" connection.

Okay, why a 3 inch valve with 4 inch pipe?

      Your flows seem easily doable.

That is the way that Pierce and Rosenbauer built the trucks. The Pierce we bought used, so we had no say on the valve. Rosenbauer had a performance spec of pump capacity (1500gpm) through the LDH discharge.

Gotcha. 1500 at what EP? Do you know? I am just curious as pumping, friction loss and the like have always been a passion of mine.

2150 RPM, 150 PSI EP - For the Rosenbauer.
The Pierce is a 2 stage Waterous, so it can be accomplished a couple different ways. We haven't done it to see the actual numbers.

For fun, we have been using our test gauges to determine the max fill rate from each of our fill sites lately (we have no hydrants). We are finding that with a single suction (most commonly can't get a second in the pond / stream) we are getting on average between 800 and 1200 gpm.

Hooking to 2 side by side 6 inch dry hydrants we were able to pull just over 1900 gpm with our 2000 gpm single stage Hale Qmax.

We had them installed to supplement our less than adequate downtown hydrant flows.
