One of the major obstacles is the fact that so many firehouses are of historical significance and "protected" from alteration. These houses were built for horse drawn or even hand pulled fire apparatus and do not have the width needed (at the door) for a 102" wide fire engine, even 96 is too much.
DCFD has had the same roadblocks thrown up by the historical preservationists. They have been able to come up with a few creative solutions, but it has added years, and in a few cases decades, to the upgrade process. E-20 has had the toughest time it seems, but their new house is finally coming on line, after just a few decades of planning and a few years operatinn out of a trailer home.

Fred are new/rehabed FDNY houses designed for the larger equipment of today and the possibility of even larger apparatus in the future? When site space allows of course.

Fred, lemee take a stab at this one.Hmmmn, under 75'? OK so far? Plus you can set a 75 up in a narrower space than a 95. T.C.

The answer to your query lies in the answer to the following question...

What is the height of 90% of the NFP MD's in the city?

    FTM-PTB

PS- Some of the larger appratus won't fit in our small quarters. For example in Manhattan there are only three-95ft. TL's. Ladder Co's, 9,12&14.

Anyone know why Chicago wears 3/4 gear instead of bunkers? Is it because it looks cooler? How about they wear it cus it works for them. FDNY orders their ladders the way they work for them.

    My rant is done......

Scopes are made in both 75' and 95' flavors. FDNY has some of each.

I gotta ask why everybody is concerned as to what the FDNY may or may not buy. Does it really matter if a ladder company in Queens is responding to a fire in a Seagrave or a Pierce?

Ferrara builds both an 85' and 100' midmount (Smeal aerial devices) and Pierce builds a 95' midmount. While I generally think these FDNY speculation threads are silly (who CARES what they buy?), I will say that, HYPOTHETICALLY, it's entirely possible that IF they're considering going away from the telescoping boom design of the Scope to a more traditional ladder tower design, would it really be inconceivable that they would also consider 85' and 100' heights? And of course they run 95' towers so the Pierce would fit that bill already.

Both Ferrara & Pierce do not build a " 75 ' tower ladder " , only 95' -100 ' midmounts so how can they bid on these apparatus ? Also the FDNY has 65 Mack/baker & Seagrave Aerialscopes 75'-95' now in service thurout the city, the scope is the top of the line tower ladder apparatus!....

Maybe if the EVT's at Seagrave would STFU and turn a wrench we could get back some of those rigs sitting at their shops. Less talk more work...
The last time I was at Seagrave in East Brunwick, N.J. they had a " Help Wanted " sign out front on the lawn area. I think they are still lacking some help " EVT'S " !....
