  • Pierce Pumpers Throttle and pump issues

    We have 4 Pierce pumpers. Two that were built in 2006 have issues going into pump and throttle control activation at the pump panel.
    Has anyone else had these issues? Any solutions?

    Contact the Pierce service center for your area to see IF Pierce has something on this.

    My bet it is in the computer for those rigs.

      I'd bet you have Cummins motors, which had a lot of issues with the pressure governors that Pierce was using at the time. I'd make a call to your dealer and follow up with them until you get satisfactory service.

        Not sure if this is what you are stating but we have a 2002 Pierce and we encountered an issue with throttle up at the pump panel. It was an off and on problem. Worked sometimes then just stopped. It turned out to be a wire rubbing along the left side of the frame rail near the front. We have not had any issues since.

          Either you have one problem, or you have two problems.

          If you're having problems getting it into "pump gear/mode", then that is one problem. That problem will also stop the use of the throttle control.

          The way I'm reading it, is your problem is twofold because of one issue: Going into pump gear/mode. Pierce uses a mechanical cable for manual engagement of the pump. If that cable gets corroded, wires broken in the sheath, etc, you'll have problems using the dash mounted pump engagement air valve. When you slide it down for pump engagement, try pulling/pushing the manual pump engagement handle. If this takes care of the problem, then you need to replace the manual pump engagement cable.

          The throttle control gets its power from a switch on the road to pump selector at the transfer case. If it doesn't go from road to pump completely, then the throttle control is not available.

          Your question is rather vague in description. So I'm kinda guessing as to what your issue is, and how to fix it.

            To add on to what Firemech 1 said, when you shift from road to pump gear do you get all the lights to activate on the pump shift indicator in the cab? If not you are having a pump shift issue, at least to start with. If you do have all the indicator lights on and still no throttle you have a throttle problem.

              We had the same problem intermittently a number of years ago and it was an allison problem in a transmission shift module. The shift indicator in the cab would show - - instead of the gear selection when shifting to pump. Our pump actually engaged but the throttle control stayed with the accelerator instead of shifting to the pump panel throttle.

                The "Throttle Ready" light will only come on once the pump shift is complete, the parking brake is set (stationary pumping only) and the transmission has been shifted into drive. Upon engaging drive, the tranny should automatically hit a 1:1 lockup which is normally fourth gear on Allisons since they came out with the "World" transmissions. If the interlock system cannot satisfy all of the above criteria, it will not send the signal to activate the remote throttle, governor, or whatever arrangement is downline.

                So, the following should be investigated:

                Pump shift, is it actually shifting?
                Pump shift switches. Make sure they are actually closing and giving correct info to the system.
                Parking brake signal. If there is no signal to the circuit, the relay won't close.

                At this point, if the pump is shifting and the switches are closing, and you are sure that the park brake signal is being sent (usually a ground) check to see if the relay is clicking. If not, it could be that the relay is bad or it is not getting a signal from the transmission. At this point wiring is the most likely cause. Run all of the wires and look for bad connections or shorts, grounds, whatever.

                  Pundit - it was the transmission relay. Pump shifted, display showed dashes and no throttle. Happened at least once at a fire and had to operate the pedal from cab to get pressure. Allison fought us on the trans module or relay replacement, but did take care of it.

                    They probably fought you because they don't supply the relay. The builder has to supply it.
