  • Cab Widths

Can anyone give me or tell me where to find out how wide different cabs are like Pierce E-One Spatans. I have found a few but not many on websites. I know how to do it but do not have the trucks around to go and mesure .

Your best bet would be to call the dealer for each brand you're looking for information on. Searching the web will get you some of them, but you'll make better use of your time by just making a few phone calls.

Do you know the chassi these trucks use?. You may be able to get some information by visiting the webiste of the cab/chassi manufacturer.

The big show up in Indy is March 24-26th for the Fire exibits. All the mfg's will be there. If you can make it there, all there to be measured. The inside dimension between the engine house and the door on each side are the critical dimensions. One popular cab has 2" less width on the officers side than the drivers side.

Pierce has the largest doors for fire apparatus.

Most cabs are about 96 inches wide.

The only Pierce cab that's still 96" is the Arrow XT.

Most manufacturers cabs' are going to be right near 100" to accommodate the new emission motors.

I measured the old style KME and the new style and the old was 96 inch and the new is 100. This is what alot of manufacturers are doing and like Scooby said it is to accomadate the new emmisions. The engine tunnels have to be wider for more air flow. The KME I measured had an engine tunnel 7 inches wider, this equates to a 3 inch loss in the cab. I was told that an engineer at Pierce has fought to get fire trucks classified as an off road vehicle to get around the emmisions but the feds keep saying no dice. I guess we will have to get used to less room!

Generally, you'll see 96 or 100 inches. The big block engines will of course need 100 inch.

I am curious why cab width is a primary concern?

It's not just Pierce, it's the industry in general trying to get exempted from the emissions standards. If that would happen, it would save us tens of thousands of dollars per vehicle. I'm afraid you'll never see it though...

Precisely! My current volunteer station (new one under construction) has 1/2" of space on either side of the mirrors when we back our 96" wide HME/Grumman into it's bay.
