  • Question for Canadian fire departments

In talking with a co-worker this morning Canadian fire departments came up. Our question is: Can Canadian fire departments only purchase fire apparatus, equipment, etc. from union based companies?

That may be case in some municipalities but I've never heard of it. The purchasing process is very similar to what they do in the U.S. as far as I know.

I've never heard that... ever. Why would you think that? Are we more union bais?

Unless I am missing something (don't think so!) I have never heard about any department specing that Union manufacturers must build fire apparatus for departments.

If that is the case there are very very few union builders and no equipment companies

But I can see the name of the union U.F.ME- Union Of Fire Manufacturers Employees! ;P

          Canadian Fire Departments

A good Canadian fire service website to pose this question is www.firehall.com.

There may be a province, municipality, etc. that may have a bylaw that requires the purchase of union made apparatus and equipment.

Pose the question on the firehall.com forum and see what kind of replies you get.

I have seen Departments specify that dealers be within 100km (that's 60miles for you) but that is only because they wanted to deal with a certain manufacturer

Pierce, E-1, KME and others all sell into Canada and none of those are union.
