  • Found a neat video showing how Sutphen trucks are made

Here is a quick link showing how Sutphen makes their trucks. Pretty neat to see if you are unable to get to one of the factories for a tour.

That's a pretty good video actually. Too bad they don't have ULC yet. Without ULC you're limiting your Canadian market.

I'm the one Fire and Rescue calls, when they need to be Rescued.

Looks just like most Fire truck plants. Outside of the Huckbolts some pretty standard stuff here. Sutphen builds a nice rig and the video was well put together. You can watch similar operations on Smeal TV. T.C.

Nicely done video. They do some really quality work. I have to be critical of one thing though, my opinion to follow, I wish they would redesign their front headlight/signal mounts, they are the ugliest thing going in the fire apparatus business. That's the reason I call them sucphen

I guess I find them pretty distinctive. I actually like them, but that's probably just me.

My previous departments last 4 vehicles have been Stuphen - 3 engines and a 95' Quint. Pretty nice rigs by and large.

so the cab and chassis is built in one building while the rest of it is assembled in another building what would be the benefit of sole source?

The chassis are built about 45 minutes away at a facility that is set up for building just that. They are then moved to the various facilities that specialize in what you have ordered. All the aluminum pumpers and large platforms are built at corporate, and the stainless pumpers and single axle aerials are built at the Towers division.

It's all still built by one company with no divided responsibility.

Thanks for the video. Sutphen is what my old dept runs. Great apparatus. And as for the front being ugly, so says some folks. Some of us think it looks classy. I think they're the best looking apparatus out there. At least they don't look like those freakishly weird looking Peirce Quantums, now that's an ugly apparatus. Or some of the Rosenbauers now days, those look like they hit an ugly tree. Not to mention all those ugly euro apparatus.

But, I do tend to be a bit biased, but shouldn't we have pride in what we have.

One thing I found out about Sutphen and our two platforms/towers, is there are two branches to Sutphen building aerials. One built by Union members, and the other isn't. Not sure how that works out, but that is what I was told.
