Does anyone have a new ford 450/550 and if so any issues with it? We're going to be looking for a new ambulance soon and wonder if we should hold off so we don't get a turd like the 6l

Nope,it be a POLISHED turd now. Juries still out on the 6.7,not enough samples running around yet to formulate a QUALIFIED opinion. And YES, I'm a Ford guy. T.C.

We just had a 2011 F350 with the 6.7 Donated to us :-)

No problems so far... I can tell you that with 400hp and 850 lbs of torq this thing flies (empty). The 450 ann 550 will have the same 6.7

I realize that this doesn't help your thread, but I thought I would add this for us to ponder. I'm interested in seeing what CAT brings out in the next 18 months. From what my friends are telling me (Keep in mind that I'm in the heart of CAT country) their offering will have a Perkins engine, CAT drive train and should be for vocations outside of heavy type construction offerings. I was told they would target the 450 and 550 types and of course above that as well. Of course, there is time for things to change and perhaps what I am being told may not be correct. I just hope that if this does develop, it doesn't end up a turd like the old IH Scout.

I was under the impression Cat was out of the on road diesel market.

Indeed they are, for now. I think this is why I was told that Perkins would be their engine for this type of vehicle. Perkins was purchased by CAT back in the late 90's.

Yes. New joint venture with IH for severe duty trucks (construction). As I recall big CAT block in IH chassis. Only place able to get a CAT in a "on road" truck.

We're taking delivery of two gas-powered 2011 F550 brush trucks on Tuesday. I drove one of them to the factory (250 mile trip) a couple of months ago and I honestly thought it was just another Ford. Eh...

We just bought a 2011 F-350 4x4 for our light Rescue. Gasoline engine. Runs good. But nothing to brag about as far as get up and go. Looks good in red and black trim. Baker utility bed. stainless steel running boards. Nice truck overall, but needs more oommph.

Drove the 2011 F550 gas motor back to work from the manufacturer today. With the body, tank, and pump on it, I was pretty disappointed with the low end (like the above poster said). I've never been a Ford guy, so I might be a little biased, but I have more faith in some of the early 00's Fords we have.

Although we did consider diesel during the early portion of the process, we evaluated the 7 brush trucks and 3 mini-pumpers we were using at the time, which are a mixture of gas and diesel, and decided that gas was best for our application. We didn't want the extra front end weight, additional price tag, two separate fuels on the vehicle, nor the worry about emissions standards.

When you're talking about about 2 brush trucks that will do less than 50 calls a year (each) across relatively flat response districts, there's no regret in getting gas. Our trip back home yesterday was from the manufacturer's plant, which is in the mountains, and the lack of low end power I found on those grades in no way mimics our jurisdiction at all.

                            Is that the 6.2 V8 or the 6.8 V10?

I dident think you could get the f550 with the gas engine. Something that heavy needs the diesel. Remember the diesel has WAY more torque, its rated at 800ftlbs.
