Pierce Recalls By NHTSA-Say It Ain't So...

How come no one's posted the 3 recalls posted recently by the NHTSA about Pierce...?

WASHINGTON - Pierce Manufacturing is recalling 2,652 fire trucks because of a possible steering control problem, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The fire truck models affected are the MY 1998-2008 Arrow XT, Dash, Enforcer, Impel, Lance and Velocity. These vehicles were all manufactured from May 30, 1998 through Nov. 25, 2008. The steering gear bracket may fracture and break. If this occurs, the steering gear may detach from the vehicle. To resolve the problem, Pierce dealers will install a new steering gear mounting bracket free of charge.

In a separate action, Pierce is also recalling 55 MY 2010 Saber and Custom Contender fire trucks manufactured from March 25 through June 22 of this year. The battery switch positive electrical post may come in contact with the driver seat base reinforcement. This poses a risk of short circuit and consequent fire.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these trucks may be equipped with drop-down fire hose trays mounted under the front bumper. The hose tray latch may accidentally open while the vehicle is in motion, posing a safety risk if the fire hose drops to the roadway without warning.
To remedy the problem, an improved latch design has been developed. A new hose box incorporating the new latch will be installed free of charge. This recall begins this month.

Pierce is also recalling certain MY 2010 Dash fire trucks that may have been manufactured with excessive paint on the steel wheel mounting surfaces. The excessive paint may cause the wheel lug nuts to lose clamp load, loosen and fall off, the NHTSA said. The wheels could eventually separate from the vehicle. This second recall is expected to begin in August.

They (the firehouse.com forum monitors) closed the thread I had running on recalls. Anyone who read it knows that I reported everything that came my way. I was usually a month or two behind, because I take my info from a TMC/ATA publication.

Here's the latest. Pierce has a recall out for a number of trucks from 2006 through 2010(?) equipped with Meritor EX225 rear disc brakes and OnSpot chains. I don't have my material in front of me, but I believe it relates to interference between the chains and the calipers.

Since we have that same setup on our Spartan, I called them to see if they would be initiating a similar recall. Spartan said that their mounting of the OnSpots is different and that they do not anticipate a recall.

This combination of brakes and drop chains is used by other builders, so I would suggest that anyone who has it monitor the situation. On NHTSA's web site I only saw correspondence between NHTSA and Pierce, but certainly there could be more in the future.

As chiefengineer11 noted, he had a thread for recalls that covered everything related to the industry. Why the WEB TEAM decided to close it down, boggles the mind. Irresponsible to those in the need to know, comes to mind, REAL QUICK!!!!

If chiefengineer11's thread would have been still active, I would have posted those recalls up when they were announced. Before, I didn't have access to recalls, now I do.

As for the On Spots and the EX225's, that is right now a Pierce only problem, but as chiefengineer11 noted, may be problem with others. We checked our Spartan rigs, and have found no problems or indications of any interference of the two. So you should be fine Sam.

There is a story about a truck that rolled over in Maine I believe that the state police determined to be the fault of the Pierce All Steer system. It is in Fire and Emergency Apparatus Magazine this month.

I wonder if there is something out there for Pierce regarding the tire chain brackets interfering with the rear tires. I saw this on three new Pierce pumpers and the problems were fixed right away. When the trucks were in a turn, the tire chain brackets flexed up into the tire and the tires got chewed up badly.
