  • Help for military transitioning to fire fighting

Long story short active duty marine infantryman tow gunner (0352) wanting to get into fire fighting i still got 2 yrs in my contract, but i was recently found out about the state of the hearing in my left ear. I guess because of my duties my hearing got bad in my left ear, at 3000 my hearing was 55m and 4000 it was 65m and 6000 it was 60m. Other than that my hearing is fine. My right ear is perfectly fine. But i just want to know will this dq me from getting into fire fighting? What if i got a hearing aid? Honestly right now i can hear perfectly fine.

Get a second opinion from a private hearing doctor??

Not sure what the hearing ranges are required to be and may vary between departments.

More important, what state do you think you might try to work in????

Ok now that we have the cause down will work on origin.

California from what I hear is a very competitive state to get hired in.

What I see they want Calif FF 1 and 2 certification and EMT possibly paramedic level.

Best advice is look at as many city fire dept web sites as you can. Some also have medical requirements posted.

See what the minimum requirements are just to put in an application.

If you are able to get any of them before you get out, it would be great. I would suggest go for emt first.

Once out and with proper certs, test everywhere and anywhere.

Do not think you will get the dept you dream of, could happen but not likely.

Get on do a year or two, if you still want to bump, start testing again.

Where are you now and will you be there the next two years??

                  Sorry,

                  The problem is first California

                  competitive from what I hear

                  The problem is second California

I believe most want some cortications, which may take a couple years to get.

The problem is third, the fire department itself,,, it may take as long as six months to a year or more, to go through a hiring process.
It is not like mcdonalds, go in, fill out an application, put a hat on and start flipping burgers.

Since you have a little time, stop in at some city departments, when you are whenever you get close to civilization. Does not have to be big city, just good size, walk in and talk to the firefighters about the process.

Most are nice, and will help you.

Like I said I would have a private non military, hearing doctor run the test.

Plus make sure you wear double hearing protection when shooting from now on

You need to worry about the certs also, because it is not a short class to get them.

If you have not checked, do!!!

Wear earplugs/muffs for 24 hours prior to hearing test. Seen it work for someone else who had bad hearing. Good luck.

Awareness and Operations required prior to FFI - 30 hours. FFI - 120 Hrs. FFII- 20 Hrs. EMT-B - 120-150 hours plus clinicals and ride-outs depending on the state. Not exactly short and easy to get.
Train to fight the fires you fight.
