    THIS IS A JOINT RECRUITMENT PROCESS WITH THE CITY OF BURBANK

    SPECIAL APPLICATION PROCESS – READ CAREFULLY

    OPEN EXAMINATION (MINORITIES AND FEMALES ENCOURAGED TO APPLY)
    SALARY $3,762 per month to start ($3,912 effective 7/1/01). Upon graduation from the Joint Burbank/Glendale Fire Academy, and approval of Fire Division management, the Firefighter Recruit will be promoted to probationary Firefighter at a salary range of $3,970 - $5,181 per month ($4,128 - $5,389 effective 7/1/01). All salaries shown include 9% PERS contribution.

    APPLICATION PACKET PICK-UP Application packets will be available January 16, 2001 through February 1, 2001 at all of the following locations: Burbank Fire Department Headquarters, Glendale Fire Department Headquarters, Burbank Human Resources Department, and Glendale Personnel Department. (Note: The Glendale Personnel Department is closed every other Friday.) APPLICATION PACKETS WILL NOT BE MAILED INTERESTED APPLICANTS.

    APPLICATION TURN-IN Completed applications may be turned in only on February 3, 2001, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or on February 7, 2001, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the City of Burbank Fire Training Center, 1845 North Ontario Street, Burbank. Applications will not be accepted at any other location, nor may they be mailed in. Failure to follow these procedures will result in exclusion from this selection process.

    THE POSITION

    A recruit trainee position that receives basic instruction in firefighting work, involving the protection of life and property. Connects/ disconnects fire hoses to fire suppression equipment, such as fire hydrants, sprinkler and standpipe systems or fire apparatus. Advances and extends hoses. Performs straight/natural, reverse and multiple hose lays. Loads hoses. Operates nozzles. Shuts off and turns on fire hydrants. Carries ladders. Carries equipment, tools and hose lines while climbing up or down ladders. Ties specific knots used in various firefighting rescue operations. Uses self-contained breathing apparatus. Participates in on-the-job training both in the classroom and on the drill field. Participates in physical fitness programs. Assumes personal responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe, efficient manner. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    Knowledges, Skills, Abilities

    Ability to communicate, read, write and comprehend direction and training materials in English.

    Ability to listen carefully to understand others.

    Ability to perform basic research, and compose/write materials in English.

    Ability to lift Fire Suppression equipment in a safe manner.

    Ability to maintain physical activity over long periods of time.

    Ability to resolve interpersonal conflicts and foster a teamwork environment.

    Skill in applying common sense and logic in decision making.

    Ability to develop necessary skills from academy and training to meet standards of performance.

    Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.

    Knowledge of a foreign language used by any large segment of the residents of the community is desirable.

    Other Characteristics

    Willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather.

    Willingness to work overtime as requested.

    Education/Training

    1. Completion of a certified EMT-Basic (EMT-B) program; AND either

    2. Graduation from high school or attainment of GED or CHSPE certificate.

    Licenses (required at time of application and at time of appointment)

    1. Current valid EMT-B Certificate.

    2. Current valid California Class C Driver’s license.

    Age Requirement
    Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.

    SPECIAL NOTE:

    Appointees to the Glendale Fire Department will remain as non-sworn probationary Firefighter Recruits throughout academy training. Such employees serve on an “at-will” basis for the duration of the training academy, and while on probation. Upon successful graduation from the training academy, Firefighter Recruits will be placed in the classification of Firefighter, a sworn position which has a one-year probationary period.

    MEDICAL STANDARDS/NON-SMOKING REQUIREMENT

    Upon being offered employment, candidates must pass a pre-placement medical examination, which includes a drug and alcohol screening. Candidates selected for the Glendale Fire Department must meet medical standards in compliance with National Fire Protection Association 1582 Standards on Medical Requirements for Firefighters, as adopted by the City of Glendale Civil Service Commission. Newly hired employees selected for the Glendale Fire Department will be required to sign a condition of employment statement that they do not smoke nor use tobacco products, and will not use tobacco products while on duty with the City.

    SELECTION PROCEDURE

    EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Firefighter Recruit Application will be reviewed to ensure candidates meet the minimum requirements.

    WRITTEN EXAMINATION: Will be given to determine the extent to which applicants are capable of developing the skills, knowledge and ability to succeed on the job.

    ORAL EXAMINATION: Will be for the purpose of evaluating the applicants' experience, education and personal fitness for the position.

    PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION: Will be administered to finalists only to evaluate the candidate's ability to perform the physical aspects of fire fighting.

    BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: A comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on all finalists.

    EXAMINATION WEIGHTING: Evaluation – qualifying, Written – qualifying, Oral – 100%, Physical – pass/fail.

    SPECIFIC TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE PROVIDED AT TIME OF APPLICATION SUBMITTAL. The provisions of this bulletin do not constitute an express or implied contract.
