    General Information

    The Charlotte Fire Department generally accepts applications once a year. The
    next application process will begin in June of 2000. They will accept
    applications June 5-9, 2000 at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center, 600
    East 4th Street. The exam will be held on July 15th, 2000. The location is still
    to be determined. Please check the recruitment line (704-336-2979) for the
    details surrounding this process. If you have already contacted the Charlotte
    Fire Department via an interest card or phone call, they should have your
    address and will mail you an aplication prior to the beginning of the process in

    The Charlotte Fire Department is highly regarded as a professional and
    progressive department and their recruitment process is very competitive. They
    receive a large amount of applications from all over the United States.

    Eligibility Requirements

    To apply for the position of Firefighter candidates must:

      [*]be at least 18 years of age [*]have a High School Diploma or GED [*]have a valid driver's license and a good driving record [*]have no felony convictions or misdemeanors involving moral turpitude [*]have no drug or alcohol dependencies, certain drug usage will disqualify

      Although they do not require that all firefighters earn their North Carolina
      EMT-D prior to employment with the Department, this certification must be
      obtained within one year of the date of hire.  Employment

        Applicants who are selected for employment must complete a 13-week
        Firefighter Recruit Training  Program at the Charlotte Fire Training
        Academy. The comprehensive curriculum covers such topics as firefighting,
        rescue, hazardous materials and a variety of other topics related to the
        position of Firefighter.

        The starting salary is $24, 967, with added incentives for level of
        education. The salary range for a firefighter without educational incentives is
        $24, 967 - $38, 732. Firefighters with an Associates Degree receive an
        additional 5%, while Firefighters with a Bachelor's Degree receive an additional
