It's great if you have a plan as a road map to follow in pursuit of being a firefighter. Without one, you're just in freefall. Here's an e-mail I just received:
Dear Captain Bob,
My name is Dean, I am interested in becoming a
Firefighter/Paramedic. I am starting my E.M.T. class in February.
I plan to join on a volunteer County Fire Department.
After my E.M.T. training, I plan to go to Daniel Freeman Hospital in
Inglewood, CA for my paramedic schooling. When I finish my paramedic
schooling I will attempt to get hired with a local ambulance company in
order to gain field experience. While working as a paramedic I will begin
applying for firefighter positions wherever I can. Captain Bob, what I
guess I'm asking, is this the "Road Map" I should be taking? I'm open to
any suggestions that you may have. I look forward to receiving your
response. Thank you for your time. Dean

I couldn't have written the plan any better. You have great insight. The
only thing I would add would be to take any test you can get to along the
way. The more tests you take, the better your testing skills become. Then,
when the job you really want comes along, your chances of nailing that badge
improve.
Oh, by the way, did I forget to tell you this is a 17 year old high school senior. If he can do a plan, why can't you?
"Nothing counts 'til you have the badge . . . absolutely nothing!
