  • Firefighter/Medic

If you're taking a firefighter/paramedic interview understand we are looking for firefighters first! You can hurt your chances if you don't let them know your first love is to be a firefighter. Too many paramedic candidates push their desire for the medic end of the job. Who's sitting on the board? Mostly Fire officers.

Understand that the burn out period for a paramedic is five years. Then, many medics try to get on fire departments. This has caused problems in the fire service because the paramedics come from a position of doing things on their own in the field. They have problems with the chain of command system on the fire job. Not wanting any more of these problem children, departments try to determine in the oral if the candidate has the heart of a firefighter first.

A way to approach this is to convey your first love is to be a firefighter, but because 80% of the job offerings are for fire/medic it was a career path that offered the best change to become a firefighter.

Absolutely nothing counts 'til you have the badge. Nothing!

Capt Bob what if in the job description it is listed as "paramedic/firefighter" and the requirement is that you are "assigned" as a paramedic for "X" number of years/months? I prefer the firefighting aspect, I love it...but if I want to get the job, whats the best way to go with this situation

Don't be confused. We are still looking for candidates that have a first love of being a firefighter.

All they are trying to do for the medic side is determine if you have the necessary skill level.

Be a firefighter first who also is a skilled medic.

-Capt.Bob makes some good points, but I would recomend talking to people in the department about what they are looking for. I am a firefighter Paramedic with a badge, and here if you don't love being a medic at least as much as you love fighting fire you won't make it. I ride Truck 3 out of the Might 14's and we fight alot of fire. The 14's is also home to Unit 3 which is one of the buissiest ambulances in the city. As a firemedic here you will ride the unit and the fire apparatus and if you don't absolutly love being a medic you are so much meat for the grinder. They call unit 3 the "beast" because it eats medics. I know alot of medics on this job who hate it because all they want to do is fight fire. The bottom line is know what the department is like. Do your research.

My work shirt says FIREFIGHTER over our department's logo, My nametag for my class A uniform shirt says FIREFIGHTER PARAMEDIC,and all my shirts have a certified emegency paramedic patch on the left shoulder. Being a Firefighetr is why I started this career, but I found out that I love being a paramedic. My engine runs more EMS than actual working fires, but we run more fire than most companies around here. In order to survive here you have to love both and be good at both.
