Any department, volunteer or career, union or non-union can collect money for the MDA. It happens that the union does use it to get good PR, but around here there are several primarily volunteer non-union combo departments, including ours, that participate in the MDA "Fill the Boot" drive every year. There are even a couple of volunteer departments.
Tell that department that is telling you otherwise to go pound salt.
And one other thing. When you collect document it as an highway operations training exercise "where members were involved in a simulated highway event in which they operated within moving traffic to conduct operational tasks utilizing accepted safety procedures covered in a pre-practical classroom presentation". Fill the Boot
Does your volunteer department or any others in your area do Fill the Boot for MDA? In our area we are looking at doing it but we have been told by paid firefighters in a neighboring district it is only for the IAFF and their members. Any help or info would be appreciated. Thanks!
