  • Flag Patches for Dress Uniforms

Our small volunteer department is startling the process of getting Class A and Class B uniforms. We need to order flag patches for the right shoulder for them and I was wondering what color border on the flag patch is appropriate, white or gold? The flag patches will be on navy blue dress uniforms on the right patch. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I thought that gold border was for officers and white was for the troops. I could be wrong. Also, make sure you check the US Flag Code and make sure you get the correct-direction flags.

      +1

The blue field should always be facing forward. That means on the left sleeve it would be a "regular" flag, and on the right sleeve it will be "reversed" flag (blue field to the right as you view it, or facing toward the front of the uniform.

Couple of rationales for this...one school of thought says the blue field should be closest to the heart. Another says the flag should always appear to be advancing, not in retreat. Whichever explanation you prefer, the blue field should be toward the front.

Although be prepared to get some questions about why the flag is backwards...

We wear the flag on the right sleeve and have the proper "reversed" version. That's at my volunteer department. As I write this, however, I'm wearing my work uniform at my paid job, and the flag is a "regular" style improperly displayed on the right sleeve...

My dream — and I hope you don't find this too crazy — is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do. You can't have people, if their houses are burning down, saying, 'Whatever you do, don't call the fire department!' That would be bad."
