  • PGFD Medical Exam

    Hey,

I am planning on trying to become a live-in at a Volunteer Fire Dept. in Prince George County, when I graduate High School. I plan on going to college up there and get my Fire Science degree. I understand that PGFD has a long process to get on up there. My question is about the Medical Exam. How strict are they on the hearing portion? I have had hearing problems, most of my life, and wear a hearing aid in my right ear and an implant on my left side (which I take off when I am performing fire ground activities). So far, since I joined the Fire Service in 2006, I have had no problems with them when it comes to firefighting. Would they pass me or not? Any tips on what I could do to get through this? I was thinking I could get my Doctor to write a recommendation letter for me.

    Thanks for all the help

Thanks for the number, Chief. I called it but I didn't get an answer so I left a message. Do you know anything else about the Medical Exam? Like, How strict are they with it? I really want to be a firefighter in PG County.

                  Well.........

Due to the layout of the building, the Commissioner's office might be unattended for a short time during the day, just give it a try again....... As to the physical, I didn't have to take one back when I came on, and we haven't implemented a "Regular Checkup" program yet.......

                    2550, here you go...

The physical is administered in two parts. The first part is a standard medical exam with Hearing, Vision, Urine and Blood tests and a pulmonary function test. The second part is administered at a different location (I dont know where, we did it at PG Hospital when I took it 20 years ago) and is a stress test which involves a treadmill and cardiac monitoring.

As far as your situation goes, my ex-girlfriend is an active Volunteer Fire/EMS provider in the County and she wears two hearing aids and has 50% hearing loss in one or both ears, I can't remember. She had no issues that I knew of....

Might I ask what station you plan on going to?
