    Sounds Familiar

This sounds a lot like a search for a muffler bearing!

Hope you don't join the department saftball team. They might ask you to fetch the key to the batters box or a bucket of curve balls for them.

The Hooligan bars are made by Paratech. They have a thicker fork end, the adze end isn't curved, the shaft it round and not as ergonomic as compared to the hexagonal shaft of a real Halligan. Basically the Hooligan is far inferior to a Halligan bar. As has been said above the Pro Bar is a true Halligan, however, a "Quick Bar" also meets the Halligan specs.

    from the web site.

THE PRO-BAR IS THE ONLY HALLIGAN TYPE TOOL USED BY THE NEW YORK CITY FIRE AND POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR THE LAST 30 YEARS. IT IS CARRIED BY EVERY ENGINE, TRUCK AND RESCUE IN THE F.D.N.Y. IT IS ALSO CARRIED BY EVERY UNIT IN EMERGENCY SERVICES AND THE HIGHWAY PATROL.

THE SPECIFICATIONS BY NEW YORK FIRE DEPARTMENT IS RIGID CALLING FOR A ONE PIECE DROPPED FORGED HALLIGAN WITH THE PRO-BAR DESIGN. THE PRO-BAR SPECIFICATIONS IS USED BY THE F.D.N.Y. TO MEET THAT REQUIREMENT. OTHERS HAVE TRIED BUT FAILED. THE PRO-BAR HAS A RECORD OF EXCELLENCE WITHOUT FAILURE FOR 30 YEARS. WHAT OTHER TOOL COULD BOOST THIS RECORD.----

There is your answer right there.

Doc hit it on the head. Halligan, proven tough one piece construction, Hooligan, held together with set screws, which can be broken. That's the difference. Which would you rather be holding when the s##t hit's the fan and you need it most?

Wouldn't it have been better to find one of your senior men in house and ask them this question? If you did, hey good on ya. Believe it or not they may look scary and talk tough, but I have not met one senior firefighter who would not stop and explain something if a probie ask's. Might you get a ribbing later? Sure.

Halligan bars are forged one peice tools. Hooligan bars are held together with set screws and should be used for nothing more than trophies.

I hope it was just an open answer question that he doesn't expect a great answer, because they are basically the same.
Heh, apparently that's what we call them 'cause that's what they ARE called. How 'bout that. I'm always a bit surprised when our local folklore turns out to have a basis in fact.

In all seriousness, in my department we refer to the cast-and-machined one-piece tool as a halligan, and the made in three-pieces-and-screwed togetherr tool as a houligan. And honestly, I have no idea why?
