I can't believe I missed this exam! I guess I'll just have to wait for a certified exam.

lilybear....one other thing....How were you allowed to take the test? Aren't you a certified firefighter in ohio? Usually on the city of orlandos online application, it will ask you 'have you ever been a certified firefighter in any other state" or something along those lines, and usually, those who answer yes, won't be allowed to take the test.
THAT SUCKS! any clue when the next one will be ?

FLA1786, I am not sure when they will have another one. Like I said, I found out about this test by accident because I am always looking on their website. Orlando is my focus, so I don't want to randomly test at my age because I already work for a large department. I can see you also really want to work for Orlando. You have a much better and direct shot than me, so keep your eyes posted, and do all you can do, no matter how long it takes, to get on your dream department. Orlando is an awesome department. I am able to say this from out of state. Orlando is an awesome, traditional firefighting unit...precisely why I want to be a part of them. I will let you know how I progress, if at all. I hope that I do, but I know how these processes work....we only have so much control. If it doesn't work for me this time, I will continue to pursue Orlando until I get there.

          Thanks for the reply.

I talked to Orlando Human Resources and they basically said they do non-certified exams whenever they feel like, no method to it, so just keep checking.

From talking with one of the chiefs dwon in Orlando, he said that Orlando will have a certified process in november of this year most likely. May be sooner. They just went though a Certified process two months ago

I was told today that I have to take this process since I am already certified as a firefighter in Ohio and had already started the process of taking the FL Standards Out-of-State process. Oh well, I am not disappointed. I just have to focus on passing my standards exam coming up in a month and my emt the month after. Hopefully, those go well, and I will be certified in time for the next Orlando exam. OFD is who I want to work for, so hopefully the next year or so goes well.

PyroPat = Do you think I could come ride along at your station in May? I will be in Orlando for two weeks visiting my family and taking the standards exam. Or could you tell me if there is a tower company that would be good to schedule a visit/ride-along? Also, how did your OFD Fire Conference go this year?

                  Thanks.

                      Thanks!!

btw, how are OFD firefighters assigned? What determines whether you are assigned to an engine, ladder, or rescue? We are on a bid process up here based on seniority, so I was curious as to how you guys were assigned.

I have appreciated all of your insight and assistance. I will keep you posted on how things go in the future.

Getting hired with OFD is difficult at best and thats if your related to someone there already. Testing 2,3 or more times isn't that uncommon. I tested twice before I took a better job offer. I didn't say a better dept. so keep your panties from getting in a knot. OFD is top rate, 1st class all the way but if your in politics (if your union you are) things can suck when the council doesn't swing your way.

The non certified program failed miserably. Everyone knows that. I won't go into those details but the targeted community it drew from well, figure it out.

This no cert. test is a bit different and opened to everyone but again, its sheer numbers testing vs. numbers hiring and thats a small percentage.

The Union has a strong amount of input as to who gets hired. Certified list or not, unless they are targeting a certain race or sexuality they will have their say about the names on the hiring list. Enough said there.

Again, great dept. very progressive in being the best and having the best, stations range from slow to extremely busy and one of the best in the State of Florida. I'd say top 5 for sure.
Good luck to all but if your one of those that "want OFD only", then i'd suggest putting out application to damn near every dept. you can. Prob. make more money than you do now as well as gain the experience that all dept. want.
