Man , these kind of stories scare me , I have only been gearing up for this for about a year.

Kobersteen's department is hiring Firefighters/medics all the time and so are about a dozen other places within an hour of DC. I work in Montgomery County MD and they are begging for people with their medics (Fairfax is stealing them all because they pay better)
Try Fairfax County VA, Loundon County VA, Alexandria VA, Washington DC, Richmond VA, Montgomery County MD, Prince Georges County MD, Frederick County MD (opened applications this week) Howard County MD, Baltimore City MD, Baltimore County MD, Annapolis County MD, Annapolis City MD, Chesterfield VA
And the good thing about most of these departments is if you are willing to drive a little, you can live in a less expensive area because most do not require you to live in their area.
Good luck and consider the DC area. Pay is decent and we do see some work.

Hey Kobersteen, I applied for Fairfax earlier in the year and I missed the test (family emergency) and they said I couldn't apply until 6 months. I am thinking about applying again but me missing the written test the first time won't count against me, do you know?? I mean later on the hiring process. Also, how long normally until you apply and then you get a job offer? I've been there a few times and like it and wouldn't mind working there.

did you take parmas test? it looks like they are looking to hire about 6 and they seem to like military guys as they give that 20% extra credit. thats HUGE for you
south euclid also hiring about 6.
alot more hiring is going to open up as guys begin to get out of the drop program in the next 1-2 years
having your 240/medic/"some experience" is just putting you on an even playing field in this area. go get some specialized classes, something that will benefit a dept if they hire you, since they can put you on a regional team. that means they wont have to invest in you if you already have the cert. rope rescue/water rescue/trench rescue/hazmat etc

I took the Las Vegas test and scored 95 on the written and 8 min on the cpat but I guess I didnt score so well on the oral. They do not have a hiring list they just pick and choose. I have taken the Chicago, Columbus, Las Vegas and just about every suburb in the Cleveland area. I also took the last Cleveland test and just missed out on getting hired but I would be laid off anyway. I would move just about anywhere for my dream job.

Toddrat.
Have you thought about DC fire? They still have a high volume of fire duty and they fast track medics on hiring. Read the above posts for the info. Also, Las Vegas is hiring ALOT of firefighters. There are 3 really growing depts out there. Las Vegas city, Clark County and city of North Las Vegas. They are still adding stations and need firemen to staff them.
Good luck.

Cleveland sucks bigtime. I have been testing for 4 plus years. I have my medic, 240 and am a third generation paramedic in the Cleveland area. I cant even catch a break getting on a part time department. I did just get a job offer at Merto and still taking big city tests throughout the country. The whole Cleveland area sucks and I cant wait to get out of here.

I also notice that the people who are on the depts keep saying it's all about the oral...ORAL. that's probably just what it is. who knows what happens behind closed doors.
Just for FYI someone had said that the agility/written are pass fail. This in also not true in my area. you get points for everything. times are taken on the agility and score of correct are on the written. Most cities will also give extra points to Military, if you have your medic, 240, or fire degree. So I get my score then they add on my fire military and medic for a higher score.

I have been on a fire dept before for a couple years but you had to live in the city. I couldn't afford to live in that city by myself (I had lived with roomates at the time). All my roomates left and I just couldn't do it. Had to move. SO here I am on the "lists" again. I was on SHFD without a problem. walked right through. I finished high on the list, like normal, and bada boom bada bing I was on. Maybe that was one of the only suburbs that hire like they should. I don't know I'm almost at the cut off for age too. I miss the fires though. best times of my life beside the Marines.
