  • Pins in my ankle

I broke my ankle several years ago, and had a couple pins and a small plate installed. My ankle works as good as it ever did now, and I can't even tell it's there. Would this prevent me from getting hired on into certain fire departments? should i even mention it when applying??? i do have a small 3 inch scar on my ankle... thanks for your help!

Absolutely you should mention it and anything else you are asked about. For the record if you lie during any part of the process you will be terminated. This includes the medical, background or polygraph. Intentionally withholding information is the same thing as a lie.

Your ankle will not keep you from becoming a firefighter as long as it functions within normal limits. The agency’s doctor will evaluate it during a pre employment physical examination. If he has any doubts you will be failed. It is up to you to get clearance from an Orthopedic Surgeon. Once you have been released by a specialist this will usually suffice. It is very rare that a city doctor will over rule a specialist.

Keep in mind that the fire department is a very physical job. Most of us are washed up athletes and have all kinds of aches and pains. You are not the first one to apply with a pin in his ankle. Don’t sweat it, but be honest.

    Good luck,
