  • Yes, the FY2010 Fairfax County Budget was passed today, but I have not had a chance to examine everything to see where we are. It is my impression that hiring has been frozen for the foreseeable future though.

I will let everyone know as soon as I do.

I wasn't there personally, but I know the proctor, and he's a reliable source. He was quite disappointed with the poor showing. Come to think of it, when I took the CPAT, I witnessed quite a few failures myself. Quite a few females died on the dummy drag, and the stepmill was too much for many others. We had a female volly come to our station for CPAT help with three weeks out. We tortured her pretty good, did our best to help her prepare, and she passed with less than 10 seconds to spare. I think candidates frequently hear that the CPAT is "watered down", or "a joke", and don't take it seriously.

        • For those currently in the process, my understanding is that a successfully completed application is held for up to two years. If I was in the mix, I would call recruitment to see if this 24 months will be extended due to hiring freezes. Also, it appears that applications are only being accepted for firemedics. Does this mean that only medics will be hired in the near future? Or does it mean that basic firefighters will be appointed from the current list of successful applications only, not those in the process? I would call for clarification. As always, keep your options open.

Same here, when i took my Cpat for Fairfax alot of people were talking about how it was no big deal, then you seem them walk out upset. Somepeople take this job serious and give it 110% and some thing they will breeze right thro. I will say i worked hard for three months before i took my cpat and still work hard, and it payed off...have to put the effort into what could set you up for an awsome future!

              • So is fairfax actively hiring licensed firemedics? I'm in the process of getting my personal hx statement together, but wondering if it really takes 24 months to go through the process.....even as a medic?

24 months is how long recruitment keeps your completed application, after finishing the selection process successfully. It has taken some medics two months in the past, during the hiring frenzy. It took me over one year, but I didn't have my NatReg until late in the process, only my NYS. We just avoided laying off 89 uniformed personnel, and next year's budget looks grim, as well. Going from proposed layoffs to filling a recruit school seems to be a bit of a stretch at the moment. We currently have nine medics, the entire 127th, doing suppression training. One of the medics were rehired from the 126th, so I would imagine that medics are still needed here. Who knows, by the time you complete the process, medic hiring may open up. Try Prince William County. My understanding is that they run two recruit schools per year, in Jan and July, with an ALS prehire phase.

I realize ther is probably a hiring freeze, but hoping to finish the process for when the freeze is lifted. Wondering i i should call to make sure i have not been lost in the shuffle

Since you haven't heard anything in five months or so, I would call, to show interest. I would imagine that the process has been slowed given recent events. Ask them if it would be possible to shedule something, as you're eager to complete the process, to be considered for a future academy class.

                      • I would take the advice and call or atleast shoot Annie Dawkins a nice email to see how things are going. I kept emailing and calling and she kept me well informed. I know Fairfax isnt letting just everyone go to the end of the process due to the amount of money it costs but it never hurts to ask and see how things stand. Good Luck!!

                        • Let me echo Joel's earlier statement ... it appears hiring new positions, of any type, is not going to occur during the next fiscal year (July 01 2009 to June 30, 2010).

There is a push to apply for a SAFER grant for truck company staffing, but that has NOT begun ... and was opposed earlier by the county executive ... the funding only starts a position that the county has to pay for in later years.

Have NO idea if any positions will be created by stimulus funding.

I appreciate that this sucks, but that is what is going on.

Civilian specialists from the department are scheduled to be eliminated (reduction-in-force) in the FY10 budget.

Look at the bind the surrounding counties that took the SAFER grants are now in, and you will see it would probably not be the smartest idea for FFX to go that route.
