    • hiring for the 127th

The rumor at this point is that the next class will probably be all medics, and I think that the recruitment website says it all when they aren't even accepting apps. for non medics. They may not even add more to this class then the original prehires that are doing their internship right now.

Yes, it is two years from the written test.

        • Medical And Poly Complete

Just got back from the medical and poly. Medical was quick Poly was horrible. It took four hours and they drain you of your whole life story in a room with a tempature about 80 degrees. Word down there is the 127th is gonna be 9 Paramedics and possible opening for 10 FF/emt don't no how reliable that info is.

          • Medical and polly

Could anyone give some insight on what the medical and polly? I know the polly is taken from your PHS. I was wondering about the medical. I didn't know if it was like a DOT physical or something along those lines, but more detailed.

            Keep safe out thare!

The medical process is as follows: You are mailed a questionaire, treadmill consent form, immunizations form, and a hemocult test kit. The hemocult test kit is completed at your house prior to your scheduled physical date. Once you arrive at the clinic you sign in at the desk and within 5 minutes an assigned nurse guides you through the different stations. The whole operation runs very efficiently and takes about 2-3 hours. The stations are: blood test, height/weight, tb test, vision and hearing, chest x-ray, lung capacity test, treadmill stress test, and a physical with one of the three doctors. After you complete all of the stations the doctor will explain to you what the next step is. Once your blood work gets back from the lab you will recieve a letter in the mail stating what medical classification you are in. If you are not from the area a nurse or your home doctor can check the tb test and then fax a form that is given to you back to the clinic. If you wear soft contact lenses you have to have your personal eye doctor send back a consent form that you are ok to wear contacts while on duty.

                • hey guys, since we are on the topic of the medical, i was curious does anyone have any insight on previous injuries and how they may play into getting a job? i have had a back surgery before, but it was years ago...i was cleared and everything and even played another year of d3 football and have had no problems since....will this be a disqualifier for me or is it really case by case basis and will i get a fair shot at getting through the medical?

The department issues frames that attach to your SCBA face piece during the academy if you do wish the use them. I have preferred wearing glasses to wearing contacts when being on duty. 1) the air you breathe through your SCBA is dry (around 1-4 moisture ppm). So the air from the SCBA (especially doing it daily in the academy) will most definitely be uncomfortable. With that in mind I suggest you rethink wearing glasses to contacts.

As for the hiring process, police and fire are hurting. Police are only taking lateral transfers from what I hear. Fire is only taking medics if they are even going to set up a class. Probationary school has been discontinued as of the 124th. Most of the stations are up in medics and firefighters. With the !:1 EMS redesign, its making it even worse and causing everyone to go on the detail bus. It looks bleak for the time being, but best of wishes to all, and keep testing with other departments.

So after arriving home and getting my hopes up for the county... I've been hired on with another department! Yay!

Kobersteen wasn't wrong when he said not to put all of your eggs in one basket and to put in to as many departments as possible.

Good luck to the rest of you! However, consider DoD...
