Did you have to do your polygraph over again?

I did have to do it twice. The second time was pretty easy. I wasn't sure why I had to retake so I was a little nervous but my examiner was excellent.

          • I'm curious what the percentage of applicants is that have only had to do the polygraph one time. I know I had to do it twice, the same as most people posting here.

            • I think it's a very small percentage unsure but I only had to do one then went right on to my psych evaluation

So the Fire Chief wants all the future academy classes to be at least 45 recruits, now how that is split between medics, emts, and non-emts, I have 0 idea. But when I started in the academy, about a 1/3 of the department was eligible for retirement and then the department is still short 100 or so medics to be at the magic number they want. You do have folks leaving for whatever reason but its mostly retirement.

                • I'm going to answer some questions I saw:
*The next academy class (141) is slated to start September 5th. USUALLY selections are made about 1-2 months out but a couple people in my academy class were notified a couple weeks out.

*The Psych can take 6-8 hours, you do a very long personality assessment, then you schedule a time that same day to have the psychologist look over your exam and talk/ask you about it. I took mine at 0800, finished around 100pm and came back at 430 to have the psychologist talk to me about it. More or less they will look at certain measures and ask you for clarification if need be but don't expect to much conversation with them unless you have some out there results.

*Most people will do 2 polys so don't worry too much about that. I did 2 and all that meant was instead of being in the 139th class, I was in 140th. It usually means that your results came back inconclusive or they want to dive deeper into something. Just be honest and stick to your answers

*If you have a chance to get your NREMT or your Medic, DO IT! It will make the beginning part of the academy much easier for you. Its not a necessity but the department will always be hiring medics.

If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out and I will try my best to answer

                  • Hey I got a question. In August I will have been on the eligibility list for a year. Should I give recruitment a call just telling them that I'm still super interested in being hired and that I really wanna work for the dept and that I think it would be a great place to spend the next 30 years ect ect.

If you haven't heard anything at all, you can reach out to recruitment but I would email instead of call. Keep if brief and along the lines of "just wanted to check my status and confirm all my contact info/paperwork/Still interested etc". Recruitment knows you're still interested, you are more so trying to find out your status. There is a guy in my class who was on the list 2 years and 2 months b4 he got called, so the wait can be long.

So everyone goes thru EMT class and everyone takes the tests and everyone has to pass, everyone takes the VA state practical. Where it varies (depends on your NREMT-B, Basic Training staff) is what you do during NREMT testing. Some classes, those who had it didn't retake it, others did. My class, those who were NREMT-B already essentially got a 2 week study hall during nremt test prep
