    good luck Muttly92094

    Muttly92094:

I took the physical test on Friday, and wanted to wish you luck this week. They don't tell you how you did, but the monitor happened to show me the sheet and it looked like I aced the events (with time to spare on each event) There was a little bit of "controversy" on one of the events that I don't want to get into here (if you want to know, post your email and I'll drop you a line to explain), but a couple things that might be helpful to you:

1 -- Keep an eye on the monitors. Part of the "controversy" was the guy was too busy b-s'ing with a friend of his and not paying attention to my doing the events. In fact with the final ceiling hook event, he stopped even saying "Ready - Go" because he was talking to his friend. I watched the Although I think all worked out okay, that I have to even worry about it is ridiculous. I felt like saying "don't worry buddy, it's only my future life here -- I've only been training 6 days a week for 9 months -- blow me off..."

2-- If you want to start early, they were letting guys walk in two, three hours early for their test. They also seemed very flexible if someone wanted to reschedule. I wish I knew the first part as I walked around Queens and hung out in my car listening to my walkman waiting for my test time.

All in all though, you probably have a good idea of what it's like since you took it already. I was shocked by how friggin grueling the test actually was. I had laughed when they said don't drink for 72 hours after the test; by Friday after the test though, I wasn't even interested in having a beer.

I was hoping that they'd give you a clue when you'd get the results, but they didn't give any time frame. As challenging as this was, it was also an awesome experience. I'm still pumped at being able to do this and the prospects of landing a job with the FDNY

    Good luck to you.

    Jim

PS -- I'm on vacation now, so I won't be able to respond right away, but I will be checking daily

    Capt Bob:

I think that number would be a little high. I think that it was 820 had put in for retirement in the year post-9/11. I could be wrong though and that number might be higher now than it was (about a year ago), but I would think if the number was that high a much bigger deal would be made of it everywhere in the press (especially in the NY metro area). Plus they would be moving those of us preparing for the Physical Test in a lot faster.

As to why the big number of retirements (820 is still almost 10% of the total number of firefighters) -- while stress, lung problems are a big part of it, another reason is that the pensions are determined by the salary in the last year of service. For some guys who were working overtime hour upon hour down at Ground Zero, there last year salary could be nearly double what it was the year before. Since the city hasn't changed the pension guidelines that would somehow allow guys to reap the benefit of their overtime pay for pension/retirement; a lot of them feel there's no other way but to retire now.

    True?

I received this from an associate. Is it true?

    Dear Captain Bob:

Just got off the line with two of my NYFD buddies (Retired). I was told that out of 11,000 firefighters, about 8200 put in for retirement. A current academy is due to graduate about 300 probies.
Post 9 1 1 lung problems and the stress are the reasons given for the high retirements.
Bottom line is that the officers will have less experience and that "bull" firefighters will have less than five years experience.
With NY have budget problems, it is not clear how and when the retirees will be replaced.
    All for now.

Yeah they'll tell you after the test if you passed all 8 stations. Don't ask the instructor while the test is going because they can't tell you, sometime you'll get an "okay" guy he'll help you out or even tell you how your doing but some of the "others" just stand there with the clip board in their hand. After the test you have be cleared by some of the FDNY-EMS people they check your BP and heart rate which should be about 10 times the normal because between being nervous and anxious to find out how you did. You have to sign a PCR refusal so you dont have to go the hospital, then you get your packet and find the nearst deli and drink about 100 gallons of gatorade........ talk to ya later!

Im taking my test on the last friday in august I think it was the 28th? Im not sure,(haha) Yeah to get 100 on the physical you have to pass ALL 8 events. If you miss 2 of the stations you still pass the physical and will be put on the list but it drops your final score alot which effects your fianl list number because the test is weighted in 2 parts, 50% is the written and the other 50% is the physical test. Just go for the full 8 events when you pass ALL 8 of them you'll get a packet from the instructor with a whole bunch of information that you have to fill out BEFORE your interview. Make sure you read ALL the stuff in that packet because they ask you for ALOT of past information and documentation. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR TEST!

Just curious -- When are you taking the physical test? Also, I meant to ask you, what did you make of the info packet we got in the mail. There's a part that says you only have to pass 6 of the 8 events in order to pass the physical. I'm not sure I get how this works. I was under the impression originally that the physical test was a Pass/Fail thing. If that's the case, whether I pass all 8 events or 6 events there would be no difference? Of course I'm aiming to hit all 8 (worked too damn hard not too), but do you know anything more on this?

    Talk to you

    Jim

Well as long as you pass all the physical stations you'll be put on the list. Don't forget that the test is weighted by 50 - so if you got a 98 and you pass the physical you'll be around 99 or 100. Some people wont even show up for the physical. It will take roughly 2 yrs to establish a new list you'll be on it. Good luck.

I got a 98.823 (I think it was one wrong). I'm not a NY resident, so I missed the extra 5 points from the residency credit. I'm just hoping that if I pass the physical, that I'll have a good shot at making the list. I already got a clean bill of health from my doctor, so I know that won't be an issue. I've just heard that there's so many people who went for the test, I wasn't sure that even if I did get a 100 and aced the physical how likely it would be that I'd make it on the list. I'm a white male who's ethnic background is Italian, so I know I'm not high on the preference list since they're trying to diversify things... It's all wait and see I guess.

I go for the Physical Aug 22

Thanks for the advice. I had gotten a "custom workout" from Capt. Michael Stefano's website back in January, which was a totally different workout then I was doing at the time. I went to a couple of the Familiarizations and I couldn't believe the improvement I had from the first familiarization in March to the one I did three weeks ago. Stefano's advice and target training helped a great deal in preparation for the events. You're right though, it does beat the hell out of you, more than I thought. I've been working out 6 days a week. Three days where I'm running and three days weights (and weighted stairmaster climbs), so I figured I'd be okay, but I was still wiped out when I went through the run through last month.

Thanks again for your feedback, and good luck to you as well.

    Jim

The physical and medical I took were from the #7029 test back in '99.
Im taking my new physical for the test that was just given in dec.02 - at the end of this month. It take's about 2 years to establish a new test list. Good luck on your physical - Just a bit of advice - Run alot - and buy a weighted vest (50lbs) and wear it all the time so you can get use to the weight because your wearing the vest and a scott pack through the entire exm until the last station, then its just the vest.... I workout alot and my *** was dragging when the physical was over . GOOD LUCK!

    Hey

I'm taking the physical test in a few weeks (August 22) when did you take it? I didn't think they were starting the new round of physicals till this week? How'd it go?

As for the answers to your questions, from what I've read in the info packages and the website, it seems that the physical/medical test and background investigation are it and then they start forming the new list.

Good luck man, and hope to see you on the job

    Jim
