  • Tacoma Fire Dept 2022

    Applied for open firefighter position in Tacoma WA. I called HR and was given to a voicemail box. Feel free to answer any of these questions I have.
    Which Fire Academy does Tacoma use? Is it out of pocket? Are you paid in the academy?
    Does TFD work 24/48 or a different schedule?
    Pretty wide starting salary range (nearly 30k difference), what factors go into your starting pay?
    Is retirement a pension or a 401k?

    If you search you can find the IAFF Local 31 collective agreement from 2016, which contains the following;

    The average regularly scheduled work week for personnel assigned to the twenty-four (24) hour shift shall be forty-six and one tenth ( 46.1) hours per week in a twentyeight (28) day cycle. The shift shall consist of one twenty-four (24) hour shift on duty, forty-eight (48) hours off; one twenty-four (24) hour shift on duty, ninety-six (96) hours off, with the assignment of eight (8) scheduled debit shifts and one (1) unscheduled debit shifts per calendar year. A half-shift will be twelve (12) hours. With the exception of Battalion Chiefs, whose shifts begin at 0630 hours and end at 0630 hours the following day, and Safety Lieutenants whose shifts begin at 0615 hours and end at 0630 hours the following day, all other personnel assigned to the twenty-four (24) hour shift shall begin their shift at 0700 hours.

    The contract also covers items of pension and wage.
