Dave, the Commissioner does want to have two classes per year, each consisting of 48 cadets. However, putting classes through needs to coincide with the needs of the department. If there are no vacancies to fill then there will be a longer amount of time until the next cadet class goes through. This class starting next month will put most, if not all, companies in the city riding heavy. The commissioner wants to re-open 1 engine and 1 ladder each year but then comes the question of funding to do so. This cadet class that is about to begin was given the green light on the coat tails of that philosophy...however the funding currently is not there. Rule of thumb, don't expect to begin the academy or be close to finishing the process until at least 2 years after taking the test.

        Hey guys,

I just found this forum. I ranked 439 on the test and it seems like after reading this thread that I probably shouldn't hold my breath but still fingers crossed!

Any chance someone has the full list that they could send me? I'd love to see where I'd land next time by moving to the city or with a couple extra points.

The full list hasn't been released yet. Regardless, you don't get any points for living in the city. The only extra points currently being offered for external candidates are for Fire Explorers, Veterans, and graduates of the Randolph program. For current PFD employees, you can get points if you work for 5 years or more on the EMS side.

You do get preference over outsiders by being a city resident. And you can tell where residents and non residents fall on the list by looking at the sequence of the randomly generated numbers, which were on the list in 2013. And you also get 3 points for having an associates degree in fire science, which I may get if it looks like the extra points would put me in a spot to be hired.

There are no points for an associate's degree. Resident 'preference' only moves you ahead of people with the same score, it does not give you any extra points.

There are 3 points added for an associates degree in fire science, it's right on the application. And I understand what preference means, while it will not give me more points it will still move me up the list and I am curious how far.

You're right. I totally forgot they added that for the last test. In any case, I don't think a final list has been released yet. They are probably sorting out discrepancies, people who didn't get points and should have, etc. One caveat I'd offer: don't count on the points system being the same for the next test. They've changed a couple of times in the last few years and certainly could again.

Yeah, I do worry about that. But, I figure the city resident thing won't go away they've had that forever. And with the fire science degree thing being new I hope it stays, but either way the degree can only help going forward. How do we get our hands on the list when it does come out?

Does anyone know what the process looks like in Philly? Board interviews, individual interviews, physical fitness tests, etc.?

For inquiring minds, a close friend on the department shared this with me: "First day of the academy today 1 no show 2 quit and 5 injured out of the 45 students."
Moral of the story, know what you're getting yourself into.

5 hurt 2 quit? Makes me think they need to tighten up on how they choose candidates, physically and mentally. I guess an 80 question WSI doesn't always find the best for the job.

I got to say I am surprised that so few people actually quit. Keep in mind that they hit up the 2013 list. Meaning most of those people were not expecting calls. With several years gone by most of them probably forgot about the fire department and about getting into shape or staying in shape.

The WSI simply puts you a step closer to the academy, the academy is where you are mentally and physically challenge. Like you, I think that perhaps it would be best if they added more than a WSI, perhaps a PT test as well. Just like the police department does. But it is what it is.

All that said. I recently heard from the office of Human Resources, they scheduled my bilingual examination. Kind of surprising since I am in the 3xx's. I thought I would not hear anything for another year or two.

Yeah coming from the old list makes sense, it is just odd to me that so many people who claim to want a career in fire/ems, law enforcement, etc., aren't ready for a call at all times physically. I was just at one of the police agility tests that my wife was participating in and at least half of the people there walked at some point of their 1.5 mile run. How are you in your 20s/30s, looking for a career, and don't keep yourself at the minimum standards?

I guess it just bothers me that some of these people get through when there are plenty who want it, not just claim to want it, prepare, and still miss out.
