I'm ranked low 300's and from what I read here have little hope to make it. However, when I attended the "mini academy" they told us that they planned on having two classes one in Spring and a second class in the Fall. Each consisting of 160-180 people. Not sure what to think at this point.

You certainly have a shot. A decent shot, just won't get a look immediately.
As far as class sizes, never heard of any class approaching that number of cadets per class.

I looked back at the job description/application page and at the bottom it says that only the oral test for bilingual applicants is graded on a pass/fail basis, while the actual written examination is graded on a 100% basis, meaning anywhere from 0-100%, not simply pass or fail.

Does anybody know how likely it is for your grade to be revised (and this your ranking with it) through test review? The fact that test review is even an option tells me that grading errors are expected to some extent, but I don't know for sure.

Yeah buy my understand is the first 80 or so question that come form the study guide is the pass/fail portion. So anyone who passes that portion is automatically moved to be graded on the WSI portion, which is how the grades/list are determined. I'm not even sure how I answered many of those questions. Grading on the study guide portion would probably make it pretty hard to put a list together, many of the grades would be exactly the same.

I, for one, am a little salty about the ranking process. As a 20 year vet, I'd bet my pension that I've a better mental and physical disposition for this job than my lackluster score would indicate. I'm just hoping the Dept. of Vet Affairs continues subsidizing Vet hires.
To everyone else who took the test, good luck getting in.

Federal grants designated for local fire departments to hire firefighters is funded by FEMA SAFER grants.
Vets were pulled off the 2011 list regardless of rank order because the department received a special grant to increase veteran hires.
That being said, it hasn't happened since, and caused alot of confusion.

I hope not. I'd hate to think that we all spent weeks reading the study guide front to back if the portion that truly makes or breaks your chances couldn't even be studied beforehand. All I know for sure is what I said earlier, that the job description page says that the written portion is weighted on a 100% basis, with no specification regarding the WSI portion.

May I ask why you think the first half of the exam is graded differently than the WSI half? Anything you know for sure or just speculation?

Just reading through other forums and feedback from others who are usually pretty good sources of info. The first half is pretty easy, so I'm just thinking it would be too hard to rank based on just that. And looking at the last eligible list, the scores went from 110-100-85 without any scores really in between 85-100...if it was a score based on the study guide, there would be plenty of scores between 85-100.

The WSI portion is definitely the only graded portion of the written test. The part of the test that came from the booklet was pass/fail. They talked about it extensively at the mini-camp and many people asked questions about it. The logic behind it was that knowing the answer on one more question than another person wouldn't mean you would be a better firefighter, but having the right mentality/personality to fit in with the department would.

Yeah that's what I thought. Seems really subjective, and more like a demographics issue they are trying to work out. All the civil service jobs are moving in this direction. Good luck to everyone who took it.

Cadet Class 193 is to report to the PFA Monday April 10, 2017 at 0730. This class was hired from the 2013 testing process. Hunker down kids, it's gonna be a while before you get a call.

Do the classes normally run back to back? Ranked in the low 50's for this last test and am trying to figure out if I should be enrolling in classes next semester if Id likely have to leave half way through.

I'm in the same position as you. Ranked very low and waiting on the next step. My understanding is the commissioner wants 2 classes a year - one spring and one in fall.
