  • NNFD process, closes 3/31

The City of Newport News, VA is hiring again, they just opened up a process that won't close until the end of March.

Been pretty busy lately, a few good fires. Great place to work, plenty of vacancies and paid medic school.

Didn't they just run a process? Is there a reasoning behind opening up a new one? Thanks

About to apply, I thought it was for medic only? I'm coming from MI, so I wish it was one week closer so when I get done with Arlington I could just head down there.

From everything I read, seems like a good department. Hopefully, they hire a lot of medics

So you don't have to be a medic to apply?

Applied... drove past one of the stations after the Va Beach exam. Looks like a great facility. They were currently doing some burn building training. Looked like a great facility

Going to try and answer some questions.

New process becuase they just made a bunch of promotions and there were vacancies to begin with. Expect a class of 15-20.

You dont have to be a medic to apply, but an EMT-I or EMT-P cert would deffinitely help, or else you will go through an accelerated EMT-I portion your first few months of hire.

You most likely passed our training facility, pretty nice place, its where the academies are held. The department started a new training program allowing each company/shift in the city to run through at least a few burn evolutions.

Any preference given for those with a degree and/or certs?

I already am a medic, so I was curious. Hoping the numbers testing would be lower haha. They aren't messing around, testing is from 9-5, all written!

I would consider the numbers that actually apply and move on to take the written fairly low for one of the biggest departments in the area. Admin does a really good job in moving the process along fairly quickly and cutting down the numbers after each stage in the process.

Having certs will surely help your cause. For example, my class of 13 new hires only a few had legitimate fire experience, most had an EMT-B cert, and only 2 or 3 had no experience whatsoever in either field.

A lot of guys try to knock down the idea of getting/having a degree, but I had one and I feel having that experience was one of the biggest things that got me hired. True, there are arguements both ways and a degree is rarely required, but when it comes down to the interview and you have stories and experiences to share that you were able to obtain during your degree, that gives you a huge advantage over someone who shows up to the interview with little to share.

                      Hope this helps.

Mule, the info is greatly appreciated. That is encouraging news to hear and I guess we'll see where it goes!

                            A few questions

New to the forum and was wondering if anyone knows the order of the hiring process after the written exam. Are there currently dates set for a CPAT & Oral Interview?

I live in Indiana and any extra information for the NNFD would be extremely helpful!

                            Thanks,
                            Matt

The procedure by which candidates participate in the selection process for a Firefighter-Medic Recruit position with the City is multi-phased:

                              Written Testing Process
                              On-going Background Investigation
                              Physical Agility Test
                              Interview
                              Polygraph Examination
                              Chief’s Interview (optional)
                              Eligibility Pool
                              Conditional Job Offer
Each of these phases is designed to identify those candidates who are best suited to meet the needs of the Fire Department at the time. NNFD will contact candidates who have been selected to advance to the next phase.

Candidates should expect the selection process to last approximately 4 months before conditional job offers.

Each selection process is a stand-alone process. Therefore, candidates interested in continuing to seek a Firefighter-Medic Recruit position with the City of Newport News must reapply during each open application period.
