I grew up in the county next to where this is at. So now I need to do my 'homework" on the department.

Did you grow up in the area that the department covers? that would be good to include. I know in New York they like the hire people who reside in the district because they know the area...

You really want to keep is short and sweet. KISS:

    Introduction.
Why you want to work for ABC FD.
Why you think you're a good fit for ABC FD.
    Ask for the job.
Thank the chief for the opportunity for consideration.

Two to three short paragraphs at most. Larger paragraphs makes for a longer letter: less interest in reading.

It's really like an opening and closing statement in the interview. Just keep it short!

    Good luck.

Think of this as the written version of two oral board questions:

    1. Why do you want to be a firefighter?
    2. what have you done to prepare yourself?

Make sure your response is well thought out, tells a story (briefly), and highlights the great things you've done to make yourself the best candidate without saying "I'm the best candidate because..."

    Best,

    PaulC.

This letter was requested after passing the written exam. I am guessing it is just a way to send a brief overview of myself and a chance to make a first impression. Maybe it is to test our writing skills as well.

Fire depts do a job announcement for when they are looking to create a hiring list. If you sent a letter of interest, that is what the reply would be, watch the papers, city site, fire job sites, and so forth for when there will be an application period. Sending a letter of interest doesn't boost your chances of getting a job.
