Anyone ever written a letter of interest to the Fire Chief. I was told to write one for a department as part of the process. Is it essentially why I want to be a firefighter and what qualifies me for that particular department? Thank you for your help.

You are correct a little of both
See what you have to say and how you say it
Not weighted to much Normaly

Think of this as the written version of two oral board questions:
1. Why do you want to be a firefighter?
2. what have you done to prepare yourself?
Make sure your response is well thought out, tells a story (briefly), and highlights the great things you've done to make yourself the best candidate without saying "I'm the best candidate because..."

You really want to keep is short and sweet. KISS:
Introduction.
Why you want to work for ABC FD.
Why you think you're a good fit for ABC FD.
Ask for the job.
Thank the chief for the opportunity for consideration.
Two to three short paragraphs at most. Larger paragraphs makes for a longer letter: less interest in reading.
It's really like an opening and closing statement in the interview. Just keep it short!
Good luck.

Did you grow up in the area that the department covers? that would be good to include. I know in New York they like the hire people who reside in the district because they know the area...
