They just received a SAFER grant and had laid off three (3) firefighter before the grant. They received just over $300,000. I would say preference will be given to those three firefighters. And with that total, that would only equal approx 3 salaries for 3 years. Any information on they are only hiring the firefighters back or if they plan to staff more would be appreciated.

Actually I read this information soon after they were awarded the grant.

STEUBENVILLE - The city fire department was awarded a $308,901 S.A.F.E.R. grant Friday that will mean the recall of two laid-off firefighters and the hiring of a third firefighter.

Unfortunately you have to be 21 to sit for the exam so I'm out. Good luck everyone.

Smaller department. They have to do what is financially possible. They plan to re-apply for the safer grant to keep those jobs. Someone has to get the 1 spot, I suppose anyone has a chance if you qualify to take it.

Steubenville laid-off three but rehired one because of a termination that occured in the department. They applied for a SAFER grant for 3 and only have two to rehire so they are giving a test to hire another. Talk of retirements coming up in the next couple of years so possibly a good list to be on.
