I actually just found a place last night on Craigslist. One of the guys from Rescue 1 is renting out a room. I think the neighborhood is called bayview? Anyways, I am excited to get down there. Merry Christmas to all.

Kings Grant is no where near the Oceanfront and out of anything short of an Assistant or Deputy Chief salary.

Shawshank. I live down near the oceanfront. But I pay way to much for a one bedroom apt. Its nice though. If you are looking at living in Norfolk, I use to live in the ghent are of norfolk and it really wasnt to bad as far as price. Plus it was close to work and would be close to the training center. There are some good places in the beach too. Kings grant isnt bad, I saw someone put that. I really cant think of any really bad spots. You will be able to see the obvious. I am not sure if you got hired but sometimes there are even guys in the dept looking for roomates. Might be helpful especially if you are from out of town. Let me know if you need anymore help.

If won't make any difference to Chief Wise if he leaves, he has new folks going on board in January that will take his place on the bus in due time.
I have an idea, why dont you stop by station 2 for lunch one day and you can see the pride me, and the guys in my company have in our dept and station. Or you can just come talk to me in person and i will give you a nice explanation of why I might be leaving. Dont assume anything, you make a fool out of yourself.

Why the negativity man. NFD will probably be happy huh? I have a quite a lot of pride in my dept and company! Station 2!! Its not about me "not making it". I do just fine here and I do a good job. I am choosing to possibly relocate for family reasons. Who are you capt old timer? Did you work for Norfolk, or still there?

They have already announced, tested and are in a process of getting ready to hire for a class.

What 2 years experience do you have and where? What type of certifications do you have?

IF you were to score high enough and IF you were to pass everything and IF you were placed in the Recruit Class and pass all the courses and attainted he certifications, you would be assigned where they want you to be. More than likely Engine 11 or 14. You don't get a choice where you are assigned out of recruit school. You are on probation and must pass that to keep your job.

Don't worry you be riding the gut bus plenty of times.

Hey Fireguy, You will end up anywhere. You will go to a station that is deemed a "training station". Those stations with engine, ladder and medic. We do have back up training stations as well. You will rotate every 4 months during your first year on probation. So yes you may end up at 11 or 14 but it could only be for a few months. If a station falls as your last one on the rotation, that is where you stay.

As far as picking the apparatus, not at all. Expect to ride the medic all the time as a rookie and still continue riding it after probation. You will ride both engine and ladder. There are no true engine/ladder assignments unless you are an operator. Also depends on what station. I have been at a station with just an engine for most of my time so I dont ride the ladder much unless I fill in or do overtime. How this helps a little. Keep working at it!! NFR is a great department. Very busy, and good people. But there are good people everywhere. Good luck.

I know the academy gives you EMT-E, and FF1 and 2, and other stuf as well.
Are you allowed to pick Engine, Medic or Ladder? How does that work?
