This is a poll just to see exactly what some of our firefighters do on their days off. Those of you who work the 24 on 48 off type schedule are the ones I want to hear the most though. What is the most common thing you do when your off, how much time do you workout when your off, and finally for those of you who have a wife and kids how do you manage to spend time with them.

Did you mean to have a poll to vote on?
When I was working in a house, I was working on my days off usually 8 to 10 or more hours everyday.
I spent what time I had left after I came home from the other job in the evenings.Stay Safe and Well Out There....

Though I'm not a career man myself I know that 99% of the guys who work the 24/48 have second jobs around here. One of the career Captains from a neigboring Dept delivers propane to my house.
If everything works out for myself, I know in the 48 hours I have off I'll be still working part time as a school bus driver. You'd be surprised how much money school bus drivers make, I only make $2 less and hour than my full time job.Opinions expressed by myself here are just that, mine. And not that of ANY organization or service I am affiliated with.

On my days off I make runs at the volly house, go to school full time, and work a few part time gigs doing EMS standbys, etc.------------------------------------

In my area, it's pretty common for carrer FF's to work for the private ambulance companies around here. The higher their certification level, the more common this is.
Many also volunteer at their local FD's.

The city FD here works a four-platoon, 3 on/3 off schedule, alternating 8A-6P and 6P-8A. K days not withstanding, that means they have 9 straight daytimes available for second jobs...Opinions my own. Standard disclaimers apply.
Everyone goes home. Safety begins with you.

I am working on finishing a degree so I can teach at the community college. I also watch my daughter half of the time. Go to the gym about 1&1/2 or 2 hours, cook dinner, clean do laundry and so on. Wife works too, so it helps when I can help out around the house.~Drew

I work the 24/48 schedul. On my days off I split my time between the volunteer department, teaching with a private industrial safety company and my pressure washing business. I also use a lot of my own time for training classes.

We work the standard 24/48. I work (~24/hrs a week, depending on schedule) as an ER tech at the local hospital. There are a number of us who do that, and the hospital has a system that works out well, as they understand and work with our unique schedule. Also make runs at the volly house and in the past picked up some part time shifts at another FD.

On my days off, I do fire-service photography, write for a couple of trade journals, and teach fire service topics for the state. And I volunteer.
No kids, and my wife and I only have 3 days a month off together, so I never schedule anything on those three days so we can have some "us" time.
The other guys on my shift do the following:- Professional photographer
- Paramedic preceptor for a large private progressive 911 ambulance service
- Power-washing
- Home construction
- EMT-B for a private routine transport service
