    FIREFIGHTER/EMT




    SALARY: $27,912

    LOCATION: Fire Department

    STATUS: Classified/Full-Time

    CLOSING DATE: Continuous



    DUTIES: Performs responsible protective service work in fire suppression, fire prevention code enforcement, hazardous materials mitigation, emergency medical service, public fire safety education, home and business inspections and disaster management; does related work as required.


    QUALIFICATIONS: Must be 18 years of age. Any combination of education and training equivalent to graduation from high school. Graduation from a community college in Fire Science is desirable. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid appropriate Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of or ability to obtain State of Virginia's Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations and Emergency Vehicle Operators Course certifications by the conclusion of related firefighter recruit academy course work.


    Failure to meet recruit academy requirements will result in termination of employment.

    Must maintain departmental requirements for the position.

    SPECIAL NOTICES: Final applicants will be required to submit an updated DMV driving record, submit to a criminal history investigation and submit to urinalysis screening for illegal drug use.

    Employees in this position are subject to random testing. FEMALES AND MINORITIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY. THE CITY OF PETERSBURG IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.


    This pay isn't much, as it's about $12,000 below the big three department's North of Petersburg, [Chesterfield, Henrico and Richmond]. It a good place for a new guy to start and get their feet wet and learn the ins and outs before applying for one of the other department that pay a lot more to start.

    Luckily I got on in Chesterfield but I would have applied for this job if I didn't. My friend who also wants to be a firefighter said he wouldn't apply for this job because the pay is too low smh. I don't get it..if you really want to be a firefighter you will do anything to be one. You have to start somewhere!

      Tell your friend to apply and get on. Then after a year or two the other departments up the road will be testing again and he can test there.
