Wichita Falls, TX FD

Hi, I submitted and application to the city of Wichita Falls in Texas and
just received an email for the civil service exam on November 13 at 8:15am.
I live in Corpus Christi and would like to test at as many places as possible but its about a 9 hour drive. In your experience would I be out of line to see if there is someway to take test without going there or am I just SOL?
I'm asking here first as I'm clearly ignorant on the subject and would rather not ring the FD up to look like a jackass haha.

Also, is anyone on this forum here familiar with this department or taking the test as well?

I have never heard of a FD giving a test remotely, so I would say you are SOL. In this economy, they will have no trouble attracting applicants, so they're not going to do anything special to accomodate YOU.

One thing you could do is find out if they are going to hire, and how many, or if they are just establishing a new list. If they only anticipate hiring 2-3 off the list, then you have to decide if the 9 hour drive is worth it.

I tested everywhere in a 500+ mile radius, sometimes taking multiple tests in one weekend. If you really want to "test at as many places as possible", then test at as many places as possible.

I have, and I think I still might go up there to just enter the process somewhere. I, however, am very limited with what/where I can apply as I have nothing but my high school diploma and about 20 hours of community college from high school. So, I've just been looking for 'trainee', but am also waiting to start the 'Fire Academy' here at my local community college (Del Mar) to get my associates in fire science, emt-b, and firefighter cert.

I'm still pretty confused how that course will work as what they have told me is they wait til enough interest is there for the academy then have an orientation, lady said sometime in November at soonest so I'm hopeful!!

That or I think I might just be putting some miles on my car and getting comfortable in the backseat for the hotel part! No problem with that....are you a firefighter in Texas by chance? I'm also looking at taking the test in Austin and Richardson. This place has been a great resource past few weeks!!

Yeah the drive is worth it. If nothing else it puts test taking experience and hiring process experience in your pocket. Which, if you want to work somewhere, you can't have enough of. Get some civil service practice books (library, amazon, etc.). Take tests, practice taking tests, keep a clean background. Since it's a competition, I enjoyed constantly training between the various "events" in different places by studying, practice test taking, and working out.

Think of it as a road trip.

Thanks for the tip, so far I'm looking at taking the test for
Wichita Falls, Richardson, and Austin.

Also, thanks for Training Division idea, I was able to talk with a lady over the
phone and she said she would email me details but that she estimated it would take about 8 months for firefighter and EMT-B, does this sound right? It sounds kind of short to me, but I really would have no idea, the only thing is the study all book portion online kind of worries me but it sounds others have flourished..

Wherever it is I end up next year I'm just excited to finally have the 'wheels' rolling in the right direction!!

I have not taken any of their courses, but do know of someone that never thought he would take them and passed the ff and emt b with no problems

The emt is going to be the harder of the two

For the ff remember on the state test all you have to hit is 70%
I do not know what the academy requires
It is a good place to go
And yes depending on your effort it will be a faster way go go

If you have ever taken a online college course you know you have to be disciplined in your studies more then a set down classroom setting, but you will also find in the set down academies they do not baby sit you

I am currently taking the training division emt-b course. Theres alot of information you have to teach yourself, I am on my last chapter and looking back it wasnt too bad. I still have my skills training and my rotations to do in november. I was also wanting to test for Wichita Falls but their test date falls on the day i start skills training. It will all be worth it once its all done.

I'm also looking at www.fireskills.com the Northeast TX fire/EMS academy. They have a fire course that starts in January 18 and finishes April 8. They also do online EMT course, so I think it would be pretty awesome to get my EMTB starting online now (Nov. 8-Feb. 12). Only thing is I dont know I I could get the skills part done while I am in fire school. Tried calling no pick up, but I hope this could work out!! Thanks for all the info guys.

I am also planning to take the Richardson test and the one in Austin. Austin has a lot of great information about the process on their website. I have been studying some books on Reading Comp, Vocabulary and Basic Math. Good luck on the tests.
