Does anyone know what the top paying cities in Texas are? I will be looking to apply in about a year and a half. I'm looking at my hometown of Abilene which after one year as a probationary firefighter you make 43k is that about average or below average for texas?

Check the web site every few weeks and you can see the different salaries
More then likely some of the dfw cities and San Antonio
You have to factor in cost of living and also second job availability -
I've heard Plano (north of Dallas) pays 52 to start and Frisco (north of Plano) pays 60ish. This is all just here-say.
Now factor in the median home price of about 250k in those communities and it doesn't seem quite as appealing. Now, you can get homes for less but they will have to be further north or in a not so great or maybe just older neighborhood.
DISCLAIMER: This is all just guesstimates, not solid fact. I believe it's fairly accurate. Also, the competition in this area is pretty stiff.
Frisco salaries listed above, I was misinformed.Last edited by FireFarrier; 10-05-2010, 09:33 AM.Isaiah 43:1-2
1 But now, this is what the LORD says—
he who created you, Jacob,
he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.Comment

Do not think any of those cities have rule that you have to live in the city
So there are plenty of places to live real nice for lessComment

I have noticed that Houston FD pays a little lower than most of the departments in Texas, but they work 8 days a month instead of the usual 10. I'm sure this makes it a little easier for second jobs. I think they start out around $32,000. I also spoke to a couple Firefighters that said Houston gives a lot of overtime also. One said he made over $10K in overtime pay. The best pay I have seen was Plano at around $50KComment

Thanks for all the input! I know the cost of living in Abilene is pretty low and have a good median in salary compared to other depts. the only thing is that Abilene 2nd job opportunities probably aren't amazing. Thats why i am looking elsewhere at this time.Comment
