      local women applicants

      Hey!

I am putting together an informal group of Austin area women interested in trying out for AFD this year. If you want to join in, email me at [email protected].

I thought it might be useful as a workout or study group, or just to help each other out, whatever seems useful.

      Thanks!

Just to clarify, if you are applying for the regular fire cadet position it is a max age of 35. If you are applying for the senior fire cadet (lateral) position there is no age max. And here is the other stuff needed for the lateral taken from the afdrecruiting.com site

            Certification
-Must be currently certified as a Firefighter Basic in Texas or certified as an IFSAC Firefighter II at the time of application.
-Must be currently certified as an EMT-B in Texas or National Registry certified EMT-B at the time of application.

Experience - Must have been actively employed as a full-time, paid structural firefighter for one or more municipalities, Emergency Services Districts (ESDs), military, or county fire departments within the two years prior to the date of application, and must have a total of at least three years of active service as a firefighter for one or more municipalities, ESDs, military, or county fire departments at time of application. Austin-Travis County EMS employees who have structural firefighter certification and three or more year’s prior experience with a fire department also qualify for the lateral program.

Does the email really matter? Just turn in the application in December and quit worrying about it.

I think it is one of those automated emails. I got it right after I sent the interest card. I did get this email yesterday about the CPAT.

                  Daniel,

Part of the AFD hiring process for both Fire Cadet and Fire Cadet Senior positions is the Candidate Physical Ability Test, or CPAT. This test is used by fire departments across the country, so there is a fair amount of information about preparing for the test available online.

The test consists of eight job-related events. A map of the course, a description of the events, and a preparation guide can be found at <http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/fire/cpathome.htm>.

We asked our Fitness Coordinator, Exercise Physiologist Jill Craig, to provide a few conditioning suggestions. Here they are:

The first event, the stair climb with 75 pounds, is arduous. If a candidate isn't aerobically fit, recovery will be slow; this compounds the difficulty of the events to follow. So, cardio activities are a very important part of training for CPAT - and for the job tasks of a fire fighter.

Carrying a weighted backpack up a stairway in a parking structure or park (Zilker, Mount Bonnell) is good practice. The test requires 180 steps, so work up to that number. Upper body strength and grip strength are also taxed by several CPAT events. Pulling and pushing exercises, such at lat pull and bench press, can help improve these areas.

Carrying two heavy dumbbells or kettlebells of different weight is good practice for the equipment carry. If a candidate has never swung a sledge hammer, it would be wise to get hold of one. Both power and accuracy are important for the forced entry event.

Crawling in confined space is another event. If you haven't crawled much since you learned to walk upright, be sure you practice; one might forget how much energy it takes.

                  Have fun!

I understand what you're saying. Emailing or calling recuiting may be the next best thing then.
