  • Juniors & School grades

I would like to see what some other Deptament's policy is on Juniors maint a proper grade average at their school work.

    ours is as follows:
"Junior Firefighters must be in good academic standing. A copy of their report card shall be given to the Company Junior Advisor. If the Junior Firefighter fails a major subject or is in poor academic standing, that member shall be placed on probation until the grade is brought up and meets the discretion of the committee."

our Jr program is only a 2 years old we're still working out some bugs.....

I believe that we used to have a policy like this, but I am not sure if we included it in our new policies. Here though, we have had a few explorers who were put on leave after their parents confronted the advisors about grade problems, every one of them ended up returning.

        Consequence

WHat are your Consequences if they dont make the grade......we're trying to figure out what "probation" should be since we don't have a definition.

Any grade below a C on the report card equals suspension from participation in calls and training until the individual shows improvement.

Our Junior Firefighters must maintain a C average for every course they're enrolled in. Any grade of a D or lower is a suspension from marking period to marking period. No Calls, No Drills, No Meetings, No special assignments, basically no nothing until the next report card which must be turned into the fire chief each time they come out.

This incluses the last one {Yeah...it's summer and they're all off but if you left in June with D or lower you must enter in a summer school class and pass it before you can ride again. Our company is tough on the juniors but none of 'em fail

Must maintain a 2.0 GPA. Dismissal until improvement.

Parents shouldnt have to confront the department about their kids' grades, the department should handle it before it gets that far.

Our dept. is the same way as most of you described.. They have to have at least a C average to participate in anything.

Our Jr. Program requires that every member is to have no lower than a 'c' in ALL classes to be able to participate in calls and training (can still attend meetings).

In our firedepartment you have to make and keep a 2.0 grade point average or your suspended for three months

My Department School comes first if the Department finds out your failing then you will be asked to not respond to calls or come to training because school is first, this hasnt happened yet, and there really isnt a way to check it because a copy of teh report cards arent sent to the Fire Chief. I beilve though that this should be changed

Actually, its quite the opposite. The parents put the explorers on a leave of absence before the post would anyways. (i.e.- The grades were above what the post required, but seen as unacceptable by the parents.) And why shouldn't the parents have to confront the post about their kid's grades? First of all, he/she is their kid. Secondly, they might have standards higher than those set by the post. Being on the explorer post is a privelege not a right.

We require a B average, and no single grade lower than a C. Anyone who doesn't meet that mark is required to attend tutoring sessions and has a quarter to bring the grade up. The tutoring sessions are held at the FD with firefighters and the other explorers helping with whatever class/subject they are strong in.

If after a quarter the grades aren't improving, they're suspended until there's improvement. Our ultimate goal is that all of the post is on the B honor roll and have options for college scholarships. We're also working on helping them out with ACT and SAT preperation.
