  • Medical Call Stories

Ok today i was on the way to the firehouse for lunch. I pull in and see the Chief is standing by our rescue. He tells me to grab my gear we have to go to a lift assist. So we pull in and he tells me that there is a 600 yes 600! pound man in his room and we have to get him out. So i walk into the room and the smell is TERRIBLE, i mean it smelled like every bodyily fluid came outta that guy all at once. I mean the paramedics were even gagging. SO we try to figure out what to do. So we decide to put the guy on a salvage cover and drag him into the hallway like 10 of us. So then the ambulance brings a bigger bus and a supersized stretcher. So we put him on the stretcher we used the WINCH from our rescue and some 4X4's and lowered him down the stairs. Something that i will NEVER forget. Anyone have stories like that one?

Remember not to spill too much, there is a little thing called HIPAA now. Tell too much and the wrong person sees, say "Hello lawsuit!"

E7T1, trust me, you ain't seen nothin' yet!

Pt. about 450/500lbs... Short of breath... Can't get out of bed... Caretaker calls 911. We show up and find it diffucult to get through th house due to small hallways. Anyways. We put her on a flat and then on a backboard. The engine crew muscles her out to the stretcher. Put Pt. on the stretcher. Got her into the medic unit and to the hospital no problem...
I found out about an hour later that I was urinated on, down my leg... I didn't realize until we cleared the hospital. ...

Exactly, can you say "HIPAA lawsuit"? In my post, we can't talk about anything we see on medical calls.

You haven't see anything until the heavy guy removal involves ropes out 2nd and 3rd story windows, winches, block & tackle, and collapsing stair cases...

            The big of it

You have to realize that not all people in this world are 100lbs. I have been faced with kind of a same situation. We had a 600lb lady that was in a medical fac. When she came in the first time it took two fire depts to get this lady into the facility. When she entered she was really dirty and yes we used vicks under our nose b/c of the smell ( YOu may want to make this a handy thing in your jump bag). But I believe there were 10 FF plus use two EMS. Well we were called a few times to move her from side to side. Eventually the lady coded and not realizing that we do not carry enough drugs and as far as saving this lady, well it was not her day. Well now we have to get her out. We got a couple pieves of plywood, a saw and allot of help. When we walked in to get her some of the people thought we were going to actually cut her to get her out, which was sorta funny. Well it took us almost 2 hourse and a heavy duty van to get her to the funural home. This was just one of the things about EMS and thinking out of the box. Its not always easy and trust me I am a fairly small person but we handled it well.

You can bet that if it is a small house it will be a big person up narrow stairs
