Diffrence

I am a police explorer, I was just wondering what the diffrence in firefighting is between a "Jr" Program and a "Cadet" Program, from explorers. I know in Jr's you basically are just on the FD at a yonger age, usually 16. Cadets though? I havent really ever seen them. I havent seen fire explorers much eather.

Cadets, Explorers, Juniors, There all basically the same thing.

Cadets are actually on the fire department, there is no seperate thing you have to join or anything, its just like being a firefighter you go on all calls, you can do almost anythnig except enterior firefight. Here in Ohio you have to be between the ages of 14-18 to be a cadet. With juniors i think you dont go on fire calls am i right? but explorers can but have to have permission, and be 16?

I dont want to start any controvery but im a cadet and I think thats the best, but i do think that explorers do more trainings and stuff,

Cadets are for like small departments

you start getting juniors and explorers in the bigger departments.

All the above information is my opinion or what I think it is, maybe its wrong oh well.

Well juniors do all the same things you listed for cadets. THey are the same thing just a different name. They both a members of the fire department unlike the explorers who are boyscotts.(sp)

Well, I know I wont get all the info out about Explorers, but here goes:

Explorers goes through the Boy Scouts of America, just like you.

More insurance, as you know.

We can do a lot, but no interior, or extrication. At least we dont extricate. Even if we are trained.

Not much difference to Juniors, from what I know, I was a Junior for a year before we switched.

I hope that helps, if I let some stuff slip, I know one of my well informed colleagues on here will fill my gaps.

Ha yea tell me abbbbout it. Plus thers lots and lost of rules. Oh and just FYI The Explorer program as a whole has been turned over to "Learing for life" another extnetion of BSA. Thanks for your imput guys.

In my town, Explorers join through the Boy Scouts, and can join at 14, but not ride apparatus. In my department though we don't have explorers. Cadets can join the department at 14, but again, can't ride apparatus. They drill with the rest of the department and do other training and work details and the like. At 16 they become Junior firefighters and can respond on all calls with the exception of the town's chemical plant and power plant. They are restricted to doing the traditional "gofer" duties. At 18 they become regular firefighters and are entitled to all the benefits the position entails.

Actually, You only have to go through the Boy Scouts of America if you charter your post with them. I believe the township that my post is located in, gets some insurance from the town itself...after your guardians insurance pays there portion of it.

I believe there is also a fee to get your name registered in there database.


If possible, stay away from registering, its hard enough to raise money for a post, and if you can get insurance through your township/city, do it! Good luck!

around here an explorer or cadet is 14 or 15 and juniors are 16 and 17. cadets can not do very much around the fire scene. juniors can do almost everything except interior, we are required to take exterior.

I'm an Explorer on the Highland Twp. Fire Dept. I can go on any run that comes in between 5:00am to 10:00pm on weekdays, can't leave school though, and any call from 5:00am to 12:00am (midnight) on weekends. the only thing explorers can't do that fire fighters can do is have direct patient care and fight a fire from the interior.

we have alot of freedom, if there is room on a truck for us we can ride the truck to the scene ( lights, sirens, And all) we are also allowed to fight brush fires.

explorers here are from ages 14 to 21.

Around here Juniors are 16-18 and Cadets are 15, and Explorers go through the Boy Scouts of America. And From what I've heard the explorers are more restricted in what they can do at the Firehouse. But Juniors can do more for a drill than cadets can do thats why we changed our name from Cadets to Juniors because it allows us now to do more in a fire drill, but on a fire scene it is still the same.

In my town Juniors are 14-18 and have to be 16 and have Basic Essentials of Firefighting AND the Chiefs permission to ride the truck.
