IF we were have the complete amount of Explorers we could have (10). Then the line officers would look like this:
Captain
1st Lieut.
2nd Lieut.
Secretary.
But, because we only have 6 people, it goes like this:
Captain
1st Lieut.
Secretary
We figuire why fill up your line officers, and only have 1 person not be it. It would be odd. So we just wait till more come to fill the other position.IACOJComment

Considering we only have four juniors, ranking like that would not work, and when we tried it, of course we all wanted to be captain and what not, but the firefighters wouldn't help us decide who should get the position, so we decided no to have any at all until they were needed. Instead, when we have our meetings (the hour before the reg. fire meeting at our station) we have a pres., sec., treas., and spokesperson/fundraiser organizer (me).9-38 Level Green

Now I know a lot of you aren't gonna agree with me on this, but I think having fireground officers in a Junior/Explorer program is a waste. How do these "officers" get selected? Experience? Most training? Age? Voted on by the other members? And what are the responsibilities of these officers, it's not like they can take command of anything or send people to do an interior attack. It seems to me that having officers in a Junior program, where nobody has more than 4 years of firefighting experience and few, if any, have any interior attack experience and/or officer training, is useless. I basically see this as either a popularity contest, an ego booster, or both.
Now, on the other hand, officers such as President, VP, Secretary and such can be useful if you have weekly or monthly meetings, as long as they get an approval from the advisor before they pass things such as how to spend money, fundraisers, etc.
Just my 2 cents...Last edited by WFDjr1; 07-21-2003, 11:16 PM.These are my opinions, not those of my career department, my volunteer company, or my affiliates. And by the way, I'm not a Junior.

we select our officers based on a few itmes. Popular vote, traning hours, ride along hours, skills test, written test, recomendations from actual department, tenure. The top of the list after all things considered is the chief, then the next 2 are asst chiefs, then next 2 bat chiefs, next 2 captains, etc......Comment

Also to add, each fireground officer has other duties, such as fundraising chairman, treasuer, rules and reg chairman, safety chairman, events chairman, secretary, president, vp and so on, We basicly combined the post officer roles and the fire roles into one role.Comment

The only thing our Captain (ME) does on the FireGround is just keep track of the Explorers that are on the scene. We give out orders too, nothing in the way of an interior or exterior attack, more like, getting tools, water, food, to their appropriate places. Filling up trucks, pulling hose, occassional Light Tower work. Anything to help.
Around the FireHouse Captains are in charge of getting the Explorers to do work that they are asked to do.
And at the meetings, Captain runs it.
For us, we have a purpose and duties for our line officers to do. The Lieutenant has a set of duites too. It all flows together, making things safer, and more efficient.IACOJComment
