I was wondering how your department responds to those Junior/Explorer members who are 18+, have FFI, and want to become regular members, but are away at college during the majority of the year? Are they accepted into the membership? Any special programs?

if your away at college and you were a FF on the roster at the time, your still considered a member. Since it's "Advancement in Education" we keep em on the roster, even though we haven't had that happen in a while. You still have to pay dues though.Firefighter, Volunteering since Oct 2001

College education, medical leave, or military service puts a member onto the LOA list. This August, I'll turn in my pager, go to one last drill, and say my goodbyes. When I come home for the holidays, I can go to the firehouse and ask for my pager back and respond for the time that I'm home. Before I return to school, I turn my pager back in. No worries about getting out of practice... I've got 2 weeks of indoctrination during which I'll learn ship-board firefighting and occassional drills after that. I'll be home in the summer and try to make up my percentages then.
