We are in the process of writing a protocol for Explorers. There are guidelines published by the Boy Scouts so first make sure you follow them. Secondly, I think you cannot have a blanket statement that Explorers are allowed to do "X" it depends on their level of training. In any case you should strive to ensure no explorer is asked to do something that exceeds their training.

Consider yourself lucky to have such a program. My Department and many others don't even offer programs like this. Or used to offer them and no longer do. I can't think of how great it must be to experience firefighting at such a young age. Take advantage of every opportunity you have in the Explorer program. Overall make sure you respect the policies that are decided on to manage it.

Like stated above, I'm sure it depends on the department in question and the experience of the explorer. Either way you should take action, become one and find out! Fireman take action. I'm sure you will have a great experience.

How old are they? If under 18, then there may be legal concerns? Or maybe not. Such programs are great. If they are over 17, then perhaps they could do most everything? With good instruction and supervison perhaps even some Code 2 apparatus operation? Steer, pump, swing? Younger the better. HB of CJ (old coot) ex FF PM RN. now just ex and old. Dinosaur. Cave Man.

When you say "Explorer" what are you referring to? Members of a BSA-Sanctioned Explorer Group?

It depends on the dept. In mine we can do any exterior work on a fire scene (minus roof and venting ops) and on an MVA we can do pretty much whatever needs to be done. Especially after we become EMTs. No HAZ-MAT for us juniors. Brush fires we can do anything without standing timber. We can respond to EMS after getting blood borne and CPR or our EMT. Basically if it's outside then we're good.

If so then they can't do crap. BSA puts tons of restrictions on them and a lot of departments just sponsor their own junior program.

Depends on the department. Our head advisor tries to let us do as much as possible. The chiefs are pretty chill, so they let us go on scene and go to calls (we have minitor v’s) they won’t let us up on a ladder truck, operate saws, go in the building or up on the roof, or go to road accidents. But other then that we’re not too restricted. Ultimately, it’s up to the department. If your not allowed to, just know it’s for your safety. Besides, there’s still plenty of stuff to do and things to learn to keep you busy. For us, we can go on calls once our advisor sees that we are ready for them. We first, have to be in drill and have been in drill for a certain amount of time. Secondly, our station officers have to approve. The station we do drill at has officers which oversee us when we do drill. They have to approve if we can go on a call with them. Finally, there has to be room on the truck and the type of call has to be allowed. If it’s a highway scene, no go. If there’s not room, no go. If our station officers don’t approve, no go. And if our advisors don’t approve, no go. But it’s really up to the department. Have fun be safe.

My opinions do not reflect the department that I represent.
