Any Advice?? I am a current Firefighter/AEMT, my current department, the crew, the people. I can't get with them, a lot bring their religion and politics to work such as trying to push their politics onto others, not in an argumentative way but more of you're deathly wrong, you this and that. A lot are racist and homophobic and it kinda gets to me. I am not saying I get sensitive, I can take jokes, I can do this and that. I go out with a lot of them after work for drinks ect. We make absolute fun of each other.

To clarify, not everyone here is like that, there are some amazing captains and other firefighter/medics I work with and love. But 40% or more are just as said. This isn't helpful either since I am also in one of the most kinda, how do I say it, racist and conservative counties in Kansas. Living here, I have never heard the N-Word being used like its normal language as much as I have, especially at my department and then surrounding cities we cover in my life.

This is also the same with my volunteer department, a good 80% of them are very conservative and racist and do just the exact same thing, but a little more harsher.

I dont want to leave this job, I love what I do and I love helping the people of my city, but at the same time..the attitude I have seen with this department kinda ruins it for me. I do block it out and have for the past almost year but it always comes and goes then comes and goes.

I have thought about moving back North, getting a job as an AEMT with an all EMS department that does actually pay about 10K more a year or even working in a hospital but I am also still a little new to this department and I love the Fire aspect a lot and always have, I am at about the 1 Year mark here and so I dont want to waste the money and resources they've invested into me and everything there.

Another big thing is, I am in the process of talking about transitioning gender wise. I haven't done anything about it yet. I have had therapy and talks for years about it all.

It’s easier to change people than it is to change people. In other words: if you’re not comfortable with everything, go somewhere else. You may try to talk to your immediate sup about it and press the matter, especially if there are department and/or city policies against comments like that (which I’m sure that there are).

Best of luck with the matter.
